What if no one believed you and you got charged with beating the shit out of the guy and went to jail and got the death penalty and then died because you stayed?

I'd stay. As much as I know I was doing the right thing and all, I would still feel like a rat or something even though I wasn't. It would just suck going to court and all to put your friend away in jail for an accident. I would be mad at him for leaving however.

Then I try everything I can to make sure my "friend" phones the authorities from a mobile right away. There may be evidence to suggest the guy was pushed in front of the car, maybe that he was dead already, all kinds of analogies really that I'd want checked whilst I'm there.
