I've been a best man before (long time ago!!). The duties I remember having to do were -

Plan the bachelor party
Go to tux fittings with groom and ushers
Go to rehearsal
Make sure groom gets to church on time
Keep brides ring until you pass it on at the appropriate moment
Toast bride and groom and make best man speech
Dance with maid of honour, or if there isn't one then a bridesmaid

All plain sailing after that!

I'm gonna be a groomsman for a wedding next July (actually, it's exactly one year from today. What a coincidence). The best man is in the air force, so I'm going to take on the responsibility of planning the bachelor party. We're going to Vegas. The best man is stationed there, actually, so it's convenient

Anybody have any suggestions?

I've got a question for you guys, if anyone has any opinions/info... Being a chick, I've never been to a bachelor party, or a bachelorette party either seeing as how I have only 1 chick friend and she's unlikely to ever marry but anyways...
How likely is the bachelor to have sex w/ the strippers or some other random tail? Course everyone and everyone's friends are different.
example: I'm sure Spidey will say that not only would he never do that but that he wouldn't have friends like that, which is good.
how many of you know guys/are guys that cheat right before the wedding?

Been to many many stag do's (bachelor parties) over here and never seen it before. I guess the guys I know are either (a) getting married to the right person, or believe they are, and therefore don't f*** around or (b) they do f*** around but don't want their friends who'll largely be at the wedding to know about it. Also at most of them you get like the bride's brother going to so it's unlikely he'll be messing around!!

I was the best man at my sister's wedding in 1996. I was only 16 at the time. Here's all I did.

There was no party or speech. I wouldn't have done it if there had been.

I havnt read all the post so this might have already been brought up. If you are single unfortunatly it will be your duty to nail the ugliest bridesmaid. At some point during the reception she will be overcome with emotion and cry about never being with someone and dying alone. Because no-one will want the bride to be upset unfortunatly it will be left to you to console her, tell her she isnt that bad etc. Alcohol and a room near by will now come together to mean that you have to bone a dog-rough bird in a silly dress. Whats worse (as most receptions are at hotels) is you cant escape in the morning and you will have to have breakfast with her.

Well, for the wedding I'm going to be in the wedding party for, I already hooked up with the ugliest bridesmaid once before, so I guess one more time wont hurt. Plus, I hear she cleaned herself up quite a bit.
