| JVN Europeans and UK'ers. Knowledge me. Could the people that live in Europe please help me with my ignorance. A few questions. Are there different types of people? I see Quack making references to North and South people. (No idea what he is talking about) Is it offense to say Europe? Isnt it Europe? What's the difference between Europe and the UK? I realize that the UK is in Europe. But what is the significance of the name? Do certain countries peoples not get along just for stereotypical reasons? Just hook me up with some knowledge. Please note: I am really only interested in hearing from the people from Europe, not the North Americans that think they know Europe. Thanks | |

| So then why the hell do people like Quack get annoyed when I say Europe instead of the UK. I would be like me saying that Canada seems like a cool place to live when I look at a travel video of Toronto. Sure its vague, but not incorrect. | |

| I'll have a quick bash at this and then get out quick before it degenerates into nationalistic chest thumping from all directions (as is the way of these boards when there are any questions relating to countries!!). England has lots of different types, however although it is a complete generalisation, the biggest groups are northerners (from the northern parts of England, e.g John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Oasis and so on) and southerners (Hugh Grant, Ricky Gervais and so on). The stereotypes are that northerners are brusque people that speak their mind and like fatty foods and southerners are pretentious sorts that bitch a lot. As we all know (I hope) stereotypes are not true (necessarily!!). On these boards guys like DDG and myself are southerners and Crock and Madd Mick are northerners. Yes, we are English which is part of both Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island). These are kind of political terms to describe the countries union I guess but I have no idea of the history of them. Suffice to say though that if a Welsh footballer does something very good, I would see him as being British, but if he did something crap, he'd be Welsh (I'm kidding!!). Some people do get offended to be described as European. We are an island away from Europe which has been conquered (and been attempted to be conquered) many times in history and pretty much always fought against it. Now however with Europe (and it's beurocrats) getting a greater and greater say in our land it seems that what couldn't be done (long term) on the battle field is actually now being just signed over anyway. We are also culturally very very different to large parts of Europe (and likewise them to us). In terms of our media, humour, music etc we are much more culturally north american than european. You only have to read our gossip mags and watch our tv to see that. The union with Europe is a very uneasy one, but also one that many other countries in Europe are struggling with and/or opposing. Well that's the sum of my knowledge on the subject. I'll leave it know for (a) those who know what they're talking about and (b) those who just like a good arguement!! | |||||||||||||||

| Are there different types of people? I see Quack making references to North and South people. (No idea what he is talking about) This is a British thing and more relevent even to England. You see there is a wealth gap in England. The south fairly rich and the north more industrious. Thus making northerners ( i.e. me and Crock) a damn site harder than them soft well`t`do southern shandy drinkers. Is it offense to say Europe? Isnt it Europe? We are not a United States of Europe. Europe is more a Continent than a Country. When people talk about the European Union, they are not referring to a country just a lot of countrys with a few agreements. What's the difference between Europe and the UK? I realize that the UK is in Europe. But what is the significance of the name? Pretty much see above. The thing about the UK is a vast majority of UK citizens are very opposed to being classed as a "United States of Europe" Do certain countries peoples not get along just for stereotypical reasons? Yes and No. They would if the french didnt stink the germans had a sense of humour the dutch wernt all stoned and the Italins didnt try to nick all our women before running away from the fight. Hope that helped | ||||||||||||||

| Im not sure Bulldog would agree or not but I as a proud Englishman as well as a citizen of the UK would much rather become the 51st state than a little peice of the disaster that is the EU. Bulldog I mean in the sense Im not sure you could be an american, not the sense that you would rather be European. | ||||||||||||||

| Well, Bulldog and KaJay managed to at the same time clear up many things, but leaving me even more confused on other subjects. I will be the first to admit that I didnt realize the only difference between Great Britian and the UK was Northern Ireland. Call me ignorant or just plain stupid, but I thought there was more too it. | |

| Ok now for some sense... Are there different types of people? I see Quack making references to North and South people. (No idea what he is talking about) North and South in regards to England. Northerners are barbaric uncivilised people who live on farms and big fields in the country, which is up North somewhere. In terms of the whole of the UK, there is different types of people. You have Welsh people like J-M (who isn't your stereotypical welshmen). Welsh people fuck sheep and are probably the most looked down upon in the UK. Like northerners they also live in giant green fields. No-one really understands Northern Ireland and Scotland is quite a long way away. Scotland is full of gingers who wear skirts and are very jolly, but dumb. England is of course where the normal people are. Bulldog is also right about the "British" label we put on things. If a Welshmen is doing well or whatever he's British, so we can relate and he's ours, so we can take away glory from the welsh folk. Apart from the south of england everywhere else you get people who talk with funny accents. Is it offense to say Europe? Isnt it Europe? It's weird. It's as if you don't recognise that Europe isn't a country, it's more like the U.N but with European countries. I don't feel European nor have ever been labelled one. It is rude, you ****. What's the difference between Europe and the UK? I realize that the UK is in Europe. But what is the significance of the name? Fuckinhell, did you not get an education? Read above or the other posts. Do certain countries peoples not get along just for stereotypical reasons? We are separate from Europe so there is never any clash really. We don't see Italians walking down a street or Greeks bearing us gifts. | |||||||||||||||
