Skimpy: Thongs a health hazard


Her big knickers certainly weren't the sexiest item in her lingerie drawer when she embarked on a love scene in Bridget Jones's Diary.
But, according to doctors, the underwear sported by actress Renee Zellweger would have been far healthier than a more fashionable G-string.

Women are being warned that the skimpy lingerie can cause irritation and soreness, increasing the risk of infections.

Dr Thomas Gent, a gynaecologist, has gone as far as calling for thongs to be banned because of the potential risk to wearers.
They have become ultra-trendy after celebrities such as Britney Spears took to wearing them so they could be seen peeping over the top of hipster jeans.

But Dr Gent said: "G-strings can abrade and injure the sensitive skin around the genital area, especially if they are too tight or made with badly stitched material."

He said he was dealing with a huge rise in the number of women suffering problems, with friction caused by the 'string' part of the garments often to blame.

Dr Gent, of the Association of Gynaecologists in Hamburg, said the resulting inflammation can "aid the spread of bacteria and lead to fungal infections."

He advises patients to return to more traditional, bigger knickers.

British women enjoy treating themselves to underwear, topping this year's spending league in Europe with an average of £72 a year going on lingerie.

Although sales of 'big pants' rose as a result of the popularity of the 2001 Bridget Jones film, thongs have grown increasingly trendy, particularly with teenagers.

'More prone to infection'

A recent survey of under-25s revealed that white G-strings were seen as the sexiest piece of clothing for women.

Marks & Spencer, a favourite for many women buying underwear, said: "White knickers will always be a favourite and we stock 18 types but the thong is very popular."

Rival fashion chain H&M said, however, that the fashion for skimpy underwear could well have peaked.

"G-strings may still be the choice of underwear this summer.

"But the trend is already turning towards more comfortable hot-pants and slips,' said a spokesman.

Anthony Rutherford, a consultant gynaecologist at Leeds General Infirmary, advised women to wear comfortable underwear that is not too tight.

"If your G-string is worn too tight or it rolls up then that might be uncomfortable and wearing that with a tight pair of jeans might cause soreness," he said.

"If you have an abrasion and break down the barriers on the skin, then that might make you more prone to an infection.

"It's like anything - if you get a cut, it, too, might get infected."

The trend towards skimpy underwear led some leading stores into controversy after they introduced ranges including thongs for children.

Argos was forced to remove a range from its catalogue after complaints from customers that G- strings and padded bras were being marketed to girls as young as nine.

Next withdrew a similar range.

Being a woman, I've heard this before. I've also heard that those way to tight hiphugging jeans can lead to problems in your lower back, something about if worn to low they cut off circulation or pinch nerves or something. I don't care. I don't wear that crap. Thongs are very uncomfortable, why wear anything at all. I'm all about the comfort.
I think it's like smoking, if people are dumb enough to wear thongs then they deserve what they get, I don't care how trendy it is.
As for thongs/bras being markedted to 9 yr olds, the idea is not exactly new. I've seen lots of slutty underwear in the little girl depts at various stores, and they've marketed padded bras to the real little'uns for several yrs now. In most cases the parents are buying this crap, so that's gross.

Once I saw a dad buying a girl who looked about 9 or 10 a pair of panties that said "tasty" on the butt. I found that so very wierd. Not only b/c fathers shouldn't do that, but also b/c 9 yr olds shouldn't wear that.

True, but kids are bloody becoming sexually active at a younger age now, which is pretty irresponsible on some parent's part and also the marketing departments of the world. I know a few 13 year old mums now, baiscally because they learn about these things and these innuendos too young.

Unfortunately too many parents (and I see loads of them!!) are so busy trying to be their kids best bud that they forget they should concentrate more on being their parent.

What the hell are you people on about? ( Why am I typing like I am british? ) Anyway, thongs are designed so you can wear panties and not see the panty line when wearing clothes. They arn't designed for kids so they can look good in their sexy underwear. What is wrong with you people lol.
