Are we becoming Fatists?

Obesity discrimination on the rise
3.39PM, Thu Jun 2 2005

Discrimination against obese people is worse now than ever, according to campaigners.

A pilot study by the The Obesity Awareness & Solutions Trust (Toast) found that 93 per cent of obese people said that being overweight adversely affected their lives, hitting their self-confidence, self-esteem and social lives.

The charity said that discrimination of obese people was now widespread and took a number of forms.

The results of their survey, presented at the European Congress for Obesity in Athens, showed that 76 per cent of obese people reported discrimination in the form of verbal abuse.

The poll of 200 people found that 10 per cent suffered physical abuse, 52 per cent experienced bullying and 51 per cent reported intimidation.

The charity said the study showed that urgent action was needed to raise awareness of such unfair treatment and develop effective solutions.

They said that discrimination may simply make the obesity problem even worse.

Toast director, Louise Diss, said: "We have been campaigning for many years to push issues relating to obesity higher up the public agenda.

"Toast continues to open all eyes and minds to the problems, not least that obesity is a multi-faceted problem that requires a wide range of solutions.

"It is vital that people whose lives are affected by obesity are able to get the understanding and support that they need.

"What this research shows is that the way that others treat people has a huge impact on the way that people with weight issues are able to deal with their own situation."

Figures show that 22 per cent of men and 23 per cent of women in England are obese - a three-fold increase since the 1980s.

Being overweight or obese is linked with a variety of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure and osteoarthritis.

Obesity is involved in at least 30,000 deaths a year in the UK and costs the NHS and society billions of pounds a year.
Of course this doesn't apply to American posters because the whole country is obese, so you can't exactly be fatists.

This is what I heard today on the news, and I think we probably are concerning those people that are fat knackers (obese), although not always directly we can't help but look or comment. This is because being fat is wrong.

they say that people are more likely to be fatist and look down on/insult fatties b/c, unlike w/ race or sex or whatnot, you can have some control over your weight.
i guess they figure that since fat people allow themselves to be fat, they kindof deserve the teasing/harassment, or exclusion.
I work at an old theater where we don't have special extra sturdy seats for the obese. I know I hate it when some fat bitch comes and complains to me that she / he can't fit in the seat. We had one regular when we played Rocky Horror Picture Show who broke at least 4 or 6 seats and one of the benches in the lobby.
Should I have to feel bad for these people b/c they've let themselves baloon up like freaks? I know it's hard to lose weight or keep weight off. I'm always trying to keep eating my fave foods w/ out having to worry about gaining weight. But it's not impossible, it just takes some self restraint and motivation.
I understand that the teasing etc depresses many into eating more, but I would think it would help people work to lose the weight. I was called fat all thru middle school even though I really wasn't, now everytime I work out, those old taunts motivate me to keep running or lifting or etc.
