Purple powder thrown at Blair in Commons

Quote:
The House of Commons has resumed after purple powder was thrown from the public gallery during Prime Minister's Question Time, hitting Tony Blair on the back.

Two protesters from the Fathers 4 Justice group, who were guests of Labour peer Baroness Golding, have been arrested after one man hurled three missiles at Mr Blair while another held a poster bearing photographs.

Both were dragged away by security staff and subsequently arrested.

Baroness Golding has apologised to MPs for the incident.

The former MP said in a statement: "I have spoken to the Speaker offering my unreserved apologies to him and through him to my former colleagues in the Commons.

"I shall, of course, give every support and co-operation to the authorities who are now investigating.

"While those investigations are proceeding it would be quite wrong for me to comment further."

Speaker Michael Martin swiftly suspended the sitting after the incident as the men were led away shouting inaudible protests.

He said the Serjeant-at-Arms has suspended the right of peers to sign guests into the Commons from immediate effect. Mr Martin added that Members whose guests disrupted proceedings are required to apologise to the House.

The Speaker said the substance thrown into the Chamber was not harmful but a review will now be launched into the handling of the incident to ensure all appropriate procedures were followed.

The serious security breach took place in an area of the gallery reserved for MPs' guests and notable visitors.

It comes just weeks after a £600,000 screen was installed in front of the rest of the public gallery over Easter after MPs were warned by the Director General of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller, that they faced a specific terrorist threat.

MPs have since backed the installation of a permanent £1.3 million bullet-proof, airtight screen after security officials warned that anthrax could be used.

Under a further crackdown, MPs securing passes for guests to use the un-screened galleries have to personally vouch for them.
