Lennox Lewis retiring

Lennox Lewis is expected to announce soon that he is retiring from boxing.

So, rather than step in the ring again with Vitali Klitschko, a man who beat his ass before the referree stopped the fight on a bulshit decision, he's just gonna fold it up and leave the heavyweight division with no marketable names.

The sport of boxing is in shambles. At least if he had been man enough to step in the ring with Klitschko again, Klitshcko might have been able to gain some fame and notreity. But Lewis is too scared to step in the ring with a man who will knock his block off (unlike when he fought a washed-up Tyson).

I dont know if anyone cares about boxing at all, but i just wanted to vent a little... :x

Too scared? WTF! look, you may not like him but give the man the respect he earned. 42-2-1. Come on. Wouldn't yiu want to retire a champ? He knocked him down twice in the round and lewis was pounding him on the ropes and he wasn't defending himself.

Let him make his mark in boxing like Lewis did, not use lewis to make himself look good.

Klitschko dominated that fight. Lewis was well on his way to a defeat.

I'll give Lewis the respect he deserves for having a good career, but he's ducking Klitchko.

He knocked him down twice. This isn't the Olympics, it is not just scored on points alone. How many times did Lewis go down? He is not avoiding anyone. He wants to retire and wants to do so as a champ. How can you fault him for that. Like I said, If you were him would you risk a loss when you want to retire?

From Boxingsfinest.com:

Los Angeles, Ca – Undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, 37 retained his WBC title on Saturday night after earning a TKO victory over Vitali Klitschko. The event, which was held at the Los Angeles’ Staples center, brought in an enthusiastic crowd of 15,939 boxing fans. The bout finished when the ring doctor Paul Wallace put a halt to the action before the start of the 7th round after concern over a cut over Klitschko’s left eye. This was not after the 6-foot-7 Ukrainian imposed what seemed like a boxing clinic over Lewis. Lewis seemed tired, gassed, and appeared to be headed for trouble going into the 7th round. This is when the bout was stopped, and the ‘boos’ began from an upset crowd of over 15,000. Klitschko was connecting with the left jab every time he threw it. The judge’s scorecards even had Klitschko as getting the better of Lewis. Lewis felt a knockout was coming soon, but the fans saw otherwise. It seemed like Lewis was the fighter in trouble and perhaps had been saved by the ring doctor. "I controlled the fight," Klitschko said. "I hope there will be a rematch”. Lewis earned $10 million for this fight and raised his record to 40-2, 33ko's. Although Lewis was declared the winner of this bout, Klitschko was triumphant in the entire event.

Also, Lewis did not knock down Klitscko in the fight. I read an article at another site where the first line read "Vitali Klitschko did not come close to getting knocked down in his last fight, but he may be floored by Lennox Lewis' next announcement"

Klitschko was ahead on the judges scorecards, and almost everyone in attendance knew that Klitschko was winning. From my recollection, it wasnt even a close fight. the most important fact, however, is the fact that Lewis was losing on the judges scorecards when the fight was stopped.

Yer right, I was thinking of another fight.

Klitschko was triumphant in the entire event? That's BS. he won 4 of 6 rounds and Lewis was clearly coming back. Who knows who would have one.

Ya he should have given him a rematch but he didn't and is retiring the champ. To say that a guy who faught all his life facing everyone is scared is not only an insult but an assumption. You don't know his reasons, only he does.

i think you were thinking of the fight that Klitschko's brother had with Corrie Sanders. Wladimir Klitschko got his ass handed to him in that fight.

I didnt really mean Lewis was scared, it was an overreaction on my part. After all, he is a boxer, and it takes a lot of courage to step into a boxing ring with another man who's basically trying to knock you unconscious

I was just pissed off because as a boxing fan I wanted to see a rematch, and I think that it would have been more "champion-like" to end his career with one last fight against Klitschko, rather than end it on a controversial decision.

I would, however, want Lewis to retire before he becomes a mockery of himself like Evander Holyfield. Holyfield has gotten to the point where hes not only an ineffective fighter, but he's doing serious long-term damage to his brain by continuing fight (compare an interview with him at the beginning of his career to now. its pretty scary)

The whole Lewis-Klitschko thing is I think just an example of why boxing has declined so much in recent years. almost every fight I've watched recently has seemed to end on a bullshit decision. Mosely-De La Hoya is another example. Even though I hate De La Hoya, I thought he dominated that fight, but the judges gave it to Mosley. If I remember correctly, the last Roy Jones fight was kinda bullshit too.

with the exception of the three Mickey Ward-Arturo Gatti fights, theres really been nothing for boxing fans to be excited about in years.

The Roy Jones fight was a hard one to judge because Jones would come on stong half way through the round and take the round. Jones could have done a lot better in that fight. When you expect more like they do from Jones, it makes anything close more towards the other fighter because it seems like he is out boxing him. Jones won that fight but it was close. Jones should have and could have been a lot better in that one.
