Since theres some dorks here, I might as well ask. Anyone ever read The Dark Tower by Stephen King?

It's a dark fantasy. Very well written. Can't wait until the series ends.

about the only fantasy I've ever enjoyed, though maybe its not much of one.

Stephen King must be one of the worst authors of all time. Nothing irks me more than someone who reads John Grisham, Stephen King, Tom Clancy and the like and somehow think they're really educated, well read people because of it.

Before I get jumped on, if you do read these authors, all the more power to you. It's certainly leagues better than those that read nothing.

My favourite authors: Hunter S Thompson, Joseph Heller, Anthony Burgess, and of course Tolkien. Not exactly the most out there of authors, but I never said they would be now did I?

I don't buy any magazines, I just read up on stuff I'm interested in on the net.

Clancy has his moments - I've read a bit of his work and while it certainly isn't the most enlightening fare out there, he does have a solid technical knowledge of military field operations that enhance the action sequences of his works.

Thompson is something else - I've read F&LiLV several times, have the Criterion DVD, and I *still* pick up something new everytime I read it.

Hunter S. Thompson is an egotistical *sshole who has a bunch of mindless cult followers who know nothing about anything.

According to my English Professor, who has won various awards, Stephen King is one of the last true great writers. It’s agreed upon by many other academics as well. King isn’t a genre writer, he can do a wide variety of things, and has. The man who wrote Carrie and Shawshank Redemption obviously has some range. Ask Hunter S. Thompson about range and he’d be clueless.

I know what you are getting at though. Popular authors generally suck. Of all that you have listed Stephen King is the only one I have read from and I’ve only read his books when I was a teenager. I do know of many people who come off as educated for reading every popular modern author out there and I agree that that is annoying.

In the same vein, I hate people who read trendy authors (Chuck Palahniuk is definitely one of them) and then pretend that they have an understanding of literature. Hunter S. Thompson is about as trendy as you can get.

(Fear Miakal, fear him!)

Hey I'm not pretending anything here - I enjoy Fear & Loathing in LV, both in print and on the screen. Perhaps even moreso on screen, since it had virtuoso performances by Depp & Del Toro.

Yeah, like I said my choices weren't exactly out there either, particullarly not Thompson. He's an *sshole, but he offers a viewpoint on things that one does not see so often. He admits himself that he is an *sshole, and I think reading his books the reader is at no stage positioned into liking him, more just observing him.
