Pfft, whatever, Simon. Yes, I'm not denying at all that it was a major event. Yes, it was tragic.

But personally, to ME, it was just another day as it didn't effect me. That's all I'm saying so settle the #### down.

So in order for something to be meaningful it has to happen to you directly?

Well, right here you fail to make any sense.

That is exactly what I am doing with pointing out the injustice of over glorifying this day.

The world isn't just America, it isn't just our flag, or our deaths, or our tragedies.

Take a look at the globe. It's a round ####ing world, it's not just one place.

I didn't say it wasn't a horrible thing or that it wasn't tragic.

But if we are to be ethical, at all, then we should be sad by ALL tragedies not just "ours".

I'm not saying it wasn't meaningful but it didn't change my day in anyway. I woke up, went to school, went to my appointments, had some food...went about my day.

So yes, 9/11 was just as tragic as so many other things. But if you want to know why it's such a big deal, consider the location, historical context, media exposure (right down to video of people splattering on pavement) and the shattering of the American international political ego.
Well said. I am sure that those close to the tragedy are affected by it more and I realize that I was being ultrasensitve about it but when you see on tv mothers arent burnt to sh*t holding their kids or little girls crying that their daddy had nothing to do with it.....it hits home.

again, sorry for getting all worked up and yes I realize that people do die everyday. I am not a fool. I realize our country does sh*t all the time that we dont know or want to know about.

Like I said before, I just wanted to start this thread to pay homage to the people that died that day. Not to hear that some of you dont give a sh*t.

Well you're better than I was, b/c I was completely terrified, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. Maybe it's because I worked down there for the summer and grew up around the towers, but it really f'd w/my head.

Totally agree with Miakal, a year on from now, no-one would have made a post remembering the lives of many Iraqis killed in this war, or some kids in Africa who died, and be all like sad about it. Once you start to look at the world as one and not just you and your ####ing country and what you call "your" people, then you're closer to a better world.

Dude people mourn things that happen to them - in the same vein you don't see radical muslims or Iraqi militants lining up to show their sympathy for the U.S. If foreigners don't identify with the event I don't blame them, b/c I don't identify as directly with tragedies on other continents - if I did I'd be in a looney bin after worrying and weeping about the entire human race.

Just because Americans memorialize the day doesn't mean they should be villified for it in the same way that other people mourn the loss of their own. I totally see how people could claim that the 9/11 remembrance is overdone, but like I said earlier, it made a huge impact on the American people. Does that mean that Americans don't feel for those who have died in the conflicts that have ensued since then?

Of course not - we're reminded of the price of war every day as casualties from both sides are reported. But at the end of the day, what are you going to be more upset about? The deaths of family members / countrymen or the deaths of people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Tunisia, Africa, etc., etc.? If you can honestly to yourself the latter, then you're a better person than I am.
