Ronald Reagan - Your opinion

Evening people, i've been doing some work on the man himslef just recently and on ethis board there seems to be a lot of opposition to Reagan and the Republicans.

From MY perpective and from what I've read

- Reagan won the Cold War
- Reagan set up the modern United States economic base
- Build America into the most dominat military force in thw world that even now no one will ever be able to beat even if America stopped building
- Reagan managed to escape from a scandal worse than Watergate simply by saying he had no memory of events
- Reagan brought an era of stability and reconstruction to Western Europe.

Why are so many people so against Reagan in America and indeed on this board.

I probably support Reagan more than most people on this board, but something you said just isn't true.

Reagan didn't 'win' the Cold War, he just happened to be in office during the Soviet Union's inevitable collapse.

Reagan didn't do any of the things you listed. However, he did do a much better job than Carter who was hopelessly ineffective (and quite frankly, too good of a man for the job).

That's what I was thinking. I wasn't around then, so I can't rightly criticize, but didn't Reaganomics uh....flop?

Depends on who you talk to. Some people will say it was a flop because of the deficit it created and the late 80's/early 90's recession, and others will say it paved the way for the economic boom of the 90's.

But don't you think that through his Rearmament program and SDI, he forced the Societs in to spending much more than they could afford, which led to the Soviet collapse.

After they spent nearly a quarter of their GNP on weapons and where unable to the grasp the idea of SDI, they where so short of funds that they began to ask the United States for Economic concessions which never really came, so once Glasnost and Perestroka was introduced in Russia and they saw that the Soviet finaces where a mess while the uNited States where in proportion much more better off. the Sovit Union collapsed.

Had Reagan followed the policy of Carter and Nixon where the process of building new weapons was slow I don't think the Socit Union would have collapsed when it did.

I think that had little to do with it. The Soviet economy was in shambles before Reagan even took office. Their national productivity was pathetic and inflation had made their currency all but worthless. The arms race had also already been won so I doubt that making more nukes caused the Soviet collapse.
