Pride: What is wrong with being proud of who you are and where you are from? When I speak of this I mean individual status.

I am from Boston and I am proud of that. Why? Not exactly sure. But what I do know is that when I visit other states in the US or Canada, I notice a huge difference in the way people are. New Yorkers are the only people that come close. Do I take pride in that? Sure. Why? Just because its the way I am and what I like.

Do you take pride in anything that you have ever done? Is it all done half assed? Or do you simply not care if a job is done well or not?

The simple fact that I have to describe pride (which isnt an easy word to describe) is just plain stupid.

If nobody had pride in anything they did then people would still be living as if it were the 1800's.


I honestly cant believe how ignorant some people are on this board. Maybe its just the cool tough guy, who cares attitude. But its pretty beat if you ask me. Stand up and be a man.

Being proud is about not being ashamed of who you are, which in my eyes is a good thing. Pride is about accepting the negatives that come with who you are/where you're from/what you believe in. and that, in my eyes, is a good thing

Am I proud to be an American? yes. Do i agree with every single decision that my government has made? absolutely not. just as an example, i think that the bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki are two of the biggest atrocities that the government of a "developed" country has ever committed. Slavery was pretty bad. Even the war in Iraq is pretty questionable in my eyes. but i am willing to accept that my country has made mistakes (like electing Bush), just as we accept that individuals make mistakes

When you take pride to an extreme, such as the KKK, who are so "proud" of being white they hate everyone else, that is when pride becomes a problem. and i think this is the kind of pride that Bike is referring to. and if this is what he is referring to, pride taken to the extreme that you demean others, then he is right, pride is not a good thing.

In my eyes, there is nothing wrong with pride in moderation. I'm proud to be an American, but i'm not some flag-waving, gun-toting, "let's go kill some camel-jockeys" nutjob that some foreigners think of when they think of "Proud Americans"

I know that being an American doesnt make me better than anyone else. I think Bike is referrng to people that are so proud to be american, they think everyone else is inferiror. in my eyes, that is wrong, and i agree with him

i know that there are a lot of problems with America, and i can accept that. but nonetheless, i think we should all be proud of where we are from.

Why is Pride a bad thing? Why is it a bad thing morally and biblically?

Pride has never been a virtue, it's always been a sin. Why is that?

Pride is the sin where all other sins are born. When you start to believe that you are something, that's when everythings turns to crap.

According to the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki when one attains pride in the things that they do, all the things that they do become tainted and meaningless.

I couldn't help but notice that the people I asked to decribe why pride was a bad thing didn't reply. So I figured the subject was over.

I would still like to hear the answer for that one.

If that's your line of thought, then doesn't that mean if you love anything, then you must hate something? In which case, are we supposed to not love in order to not hate? And if that's the case, that logic is twisted.

I think you twisted it yourself. That's like saying if you love a girl, then that means you must hate another, that really doesn't make a cohesive point.

There's nothing wrong with loving where your from, but like Mister D said before, which was the point I was aiming at, profuse love of one country usually leads or stems to/from the hate of another.

Usually being the operative word here - you can make all the assumptions you want, but you can't place those on specific individuals such as myself, Simon & Mister D. The problem here is that people are using blanket theories and stereotypes - i.e., If you love America, you usually hate other countries. That isn't the case here, but if you want to shove us into a stereotype feel free - just realize that you're wrong to do so.

First off, don't think that I'm excluding myself from Pride, no one does, everyone has pride in themselves, I pride myself on where I'm from, what I can do, what I have done, and the type of person that I am.

But when it comes down to it, is there necessarily a point for it at all, it's just a culmination of one's arrogance, everyone has arrogance....and pride is the source of it. This maybe explains why pride is the first and foremost sin of the six it preceeds. Pride has been identified as the [b:post_uid0]worst[/b:post_uid0] sin of all. It's why were in the ####ing mess of a world that we live in right now, everyone has put their own pride in front of what is morally right.....everyone has ####ing done it, everyone on this forum, and everyone breathing the air of this disgusting place we live in. But hey it's all we have, and we laid the foundations to what it is now.

This isn't an attack on America, or any of you, I merely used it as an example, what nation boasts it's pride more than anyother....The United States of America. That's it, I used that as an example, because there is absolutely none better.

I'm just stating why I think the world would be a better place without pride, but of course this is never going to happen, it is a characteristic that is immune to absolutely no one.
