A common theme on this board is the "safe society".
For example, you can't have guns because sometimes it's misused.
You can't smoke cigarettes because people end up getting cancer.
You can't do drugs because then you'll rob your neighbor and rape your mother.
Where should the line be for the government to say what we can and cannot do?
Should there be one at all? Can you even define where that line would be?
It seems horrific the way people will say guns are bad but alcohol is okay. Or that cigarettes are bad but drugs are good. Everyone has some kind of weird loophole that makes the other one okay.
What is the goal of the government anyway? Can they really protect us from everything? And if they can, should they make that choice for us?
Is it true that the government could abuse and cross a line on how they want to protect us? What's next, no fat, no sugar? Or is that extreme?
But isn't banning cigarettes extreme too?

Yeah, that's one of the few things that prevents me from calling myself a Liberatarian, but for the most part I do believe in Liberatarian philosophies. It's just something about guns, but no need to rehash what was already a lengthy debate.
This reminds me of something interesting I heard on the radio the other day. Apparently Howard Dean, the Democratic front runner last time I checked, wants to reregulate all forms of media. He's even implied that he would work to break up major media conglomorates like Fox and Time Warner. If this guy becomes our president even Democrats will be missing the Bush days before long. He's a nut case, and a real politician in the worst way.

I'm sure you got that from Conservative radio which was owned by one of the TWO major news outlets in this country (and pretty much world).
Of course Bush doesn't want to regulate the news sources, he's a big business whore.

Everyone seems to have this philosophy that the government shouldn't tell us what to do, as long as it fits your needs, but whenever it starts to effect you negatively (or even just effect society negatively) you become all against it.
How does that work?
Where should the line be for Government to say what we can and cannot do?
