Does anyone take antidepressants here? Do they work for you?

Papa Shango thinks I'm the re-birth of Kurt Cobain or something, that I'm face first into the fist of sadness all day long. But thats not true.

We'll push this question a little bit farther as well, what do you do when you are feeling down?

Do you smoke the pot? Do you talk to some real sexy ladies? Do you order a personal escort? Meditation? Read? Cry?

Well I don't take it, but it's supposed to work. I took a couple while I was drinking once but it didn't do sh*t. But I really didn't expect it too. It's a depressant vs. anti-depressant.

There is no depression strong enough to go 12 rounds with a bottle of sauce - pick your poison, I'm partial to Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray 10 myself.

i refuse to take anti-depressants. if i'm upset about something, i dont want to "trick" myself into being happy. also, if something makes me depressed (like i was a few months ago when i was unemployed, or now because of bad luck with women), i want to be upset about it so that i'll be motivated to fix the problem.

like when i didnt have a job, i was so miserable, that i was doing everything i could to find a job. i was looking online, in the papers, sending my resume everywhere. if i had been on anti-depressants, and more happy with my life, i might not have been so gung-ho about finding a job and i might not have landed where i am now

i understand that there are some people who suffer from uncontrollable depression, and for those people medication and/or therapy is necessary. but when i'm depressed, its different. i know the root of all my problems, and i'd prefer to face them head-on

and when i'm upset, i definitely dont turn to liquor. it just makes me more depressed

Wow this is my second post here since being back on this site (I used to frequent it for a few years about 3-4 years ago.) and I'll admit to being a chronic depressive. Yup, on medications and seeing a psych for a few years now. The thing with manic depression and chronic is the severity. Mine can be control without the use of drugs MOST of the time, and the manic ones need it or may go over the edge.

No sure if you are looking for this type of info about the real thing or if you were just curious about those who feel depressed occasionally and what they do for it... The medication (prescribed) that has been the most effective with me is called EFFEXOR. It doesn't snap you out of things, it just helps to keep your emotions and feelings stable. There is the whole chemical brain imbalance stuff that I won't get into but MOST of these drugs just aid the flow of the restricted chemicals and keep them from fluctuating eradically. Still haven't found the source of the problem, but it goes back close to 15 years now I have been suffering... but only got help for the past 3 years.

That's the basics. These drugs take time to get into the system, they aren't a quick fix and often have MANY side efffects. And illegal drug may be a temp fix sometimes, but when you come down, you come down hard. If you'd like more details I could get into a little more if you think your problem may be serious, or if you were just wondering what people do to cheer themselves up... I say go for the ladies!

Ten out of ten people die, so don't take life too seriously.
