Does anyone consider themselves to be fairly knowledgable in Christian religion?
I have a question about it, maybe Drunksader can be the one to answer it.
I've never really understood the concept of faith or where it stemmed from. Faith is very illogical to me.
Why do we have to believe in something, why can't it simply exist?
Furthermore, belief can bring on experience so isn't that more than just mere faith?

I'll try to keep my Christian-bashing to a minimum, should the opportunity arise. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Yes, I'm looking for a conversation on the issues of religion and their basic beliefs, not an argument based on negativity.

It's difficult to really determine where faith derived from, but I believe there have been a fair amount of studies done on ancient tribes that circles around the creation of religion.
If you want to look at it from a historical rather than theological bent, faith probably came from early civilized man (and by that I mean tribal) using religion (or at least the concept of a higher power) to explain the unexplainable. Lightning strikes the chief? Thunder Gods must be pissed. Plague ravages the village? Chieftain's wife must've been a wh*re.
With that sort of early logic it's pretty easy to extropolate where the idea of "faith" came from. If you keep using religion to explain the unexplainable then eventually you begin to rely on this same religion to fill in the gaps in your life.
The evolution of faith is rather simple to follow - tribal beliefs that the unexplained must be the Gods to insitutionalized religion where faith in one's God provides the foundation for all sacrifice for said God.
Faith isn't something that can be measured with any sort of accuracy, since it depicts the relationship between an individual and his religion/God. It's a belief that life has a purpose - this purpose is manifested through following the tenets of one's religion and being rewarded for it with eternal happiness in heaven. (Note - this is ONE of MANNNNY concepts of the purpose of religion, so don't nail me on that Zen Buddhist schtick again.)
If something existed, people wouldn't have to believe in it - it's a tangible entity. That's the great mystery of religion: why human beings, supposedly the most practical beings on the face of the Earth, put such stock in a theoretical principal that they are willing to kill for it.
Faith is a function of belief, in my opinion. If you believe in something, the physical act of doing so is epitomized in the word faith. Faith in Jesus underscores a belief in Roman Catholicism itself, for example.
I'm not sure where you're coming from when you say "belief can bring on experience." I say, quite to the contrary, that it would be experience that brings on belief. Then again, we observe different religions, so I really can't address this particular point if it's embedded in Buddhism - the only thing I experience is Christmas To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater.
