Are Americans REALLY this ignorant?

I hope I don't come off as a prick here, but this is just something I've been noticing. As a few of you know, I've been down in the USA (West Virginia) for a week now, and I cannot get over how pathetically little they know about Canada. Maybe it's just West Virginia, but can some of you Americans give me a response?

Of all the people I have talked to and told where I live, and I've met many people, only ONE has understood my response of "British Columbia" or "B.C." I've had several "you don't sound British" comments, several "in't that a long taaime ago?" comments, but mostly blank stares. Then I say "...Canada" and they all recognize that name but it doesn't get much better. Half the people have said, "oh right, you live in Toronto then." It doesn't seem like anyone knows a damn thing about Canada, and I heard it was like this, but not this bad.

That's West Virginia. They're retards. Personally I think they should be dis-owned from the union until they quit screwing their own cousins. But that's just my personal opinion.

Freak, you have to take into consideration that most of the people in that state are redheck hillybilly hicks that dont know much about their own state let alone another country, thats asking way too much.

Basically anything below New York is hickville.

Southerners have been giving us Americans a bad name since the Civil war. ???

You're right about there being a lot of hicks here, about 40% of the West Virginians I've talked to have been hillbillies, with another 40% being black guys. I forgot to mention that I visited Pittsburgh for a day though, and the case was the same there.

It's nice to hear WV is only a special case though.

I used to work in a call center that supported US customers only. When people asked where we were located I told them Nova Scotia. Hardly one person I talked to knew where Nova Scotia was. Most thought it was one of the states in the US. When I told them Canada they would say something like is it still really cold up there? It was pretty funny, actually.
