Poker Question of the Day - Oct.6

Your hand:

Game: No-Limit Hold’em, Full Table Cash Game
Position: Middle
Type of game: Normal
Blinds: $15-$30

Question: This is the second question in a three question series. You have A Q in middle position. One of the early seats raised to $80 and there were 5 people left to act behind you (including the blinds). You flat called as did the button and the big blind. The big blind is a strong player. The flop came A J 2. The Big Blind checks and the pre-flop raiser bets $200. What should you do?

Call? Fold? Raise?

I used to. I've been everywhere lol. I won some big tournaments there back in the days. Now I play on InterPoker and wsex mostly. wsex has no rake and Inter has some great bonuses.

I would raise. Top pair, second best kicker. There are only 4 reasonable holdings that can beat you: AA, AK, AJ, and JJ. Raise and see what happens. If he comes back over the top, you can guess that he has one of those hands, and you you throw your hand away.

His bet may have just been a continuation of his pre-flop raise, or he could have something like KQ and be drawing to a straight. Maybe even KK or QQ. If any of those is true, then you've got the best hand right now, and you dont want him getting another card to improve his hand.

You have to RAISE.

You have a pretty big hand and by raising you will most likely be getting rid of the big blind and the puck. You can have to many people chasing their draws or second pairs or their small pocket pairs. You also might win the hand right there if you can get the original bettor to fold with that raise. If he doesnt fold and just calls, you are most likely good anyway. If he re-raises, then you have reevaluate the situation and you might have to fold.
