Unless you've lived under a rock in the last half-decade, you know that the economy (in a global sense) has taken a nose dive compared to the better days in the 90's. For some, this recession has meant lost jobs, selling property, moving back in with parents, or even moving out of state to survive.
Everyone has either been directly affected by this downturn or knows someone who has been. What's your story? How are you/they coping with the times and is there any relief in sight?
It seems the "experts" are saying the next few years should be looking up, but who knows. So...do you find yourself scaling back on purchases you make, did you lose a job/house/etc, or are things going on just as they would for you?
The economy really hasn't had a *huge* impact oh me and my wife as of yet. We've still noticed that our paychecks are gone almost as quickly as we get them - which has been normal since the day we got married and moved into our house. I'd say the only real difference nowadays is that we just don't go out as much as we used to. And, as I posted in another thread, we try to drive one of our cars until they're nearly out of gas before switching to our other vehicle... to help the environment, but mostly to save money since I've noticed gas prices are beginning to rise a little around the area.

Oddly, the economy has actually added to my job security. I work for the government and this whole situation has only made us busier. I also work in a region that has been affected by the downturn less than most of North America.

Bigpapa, that doesn't surprise me about the government and adding to job security. I work for the "Big 3" and it hasn't been ideal here, as you can imagine. There is a tank division near me that I've been trying to apply to for the past few years, with little luck outside of a couple interviews.
No matter how much this country goes in the shitter, our government will still be spending money, which is why I'd love to get into that place and get more job security.

It does depend on what area of the government, at least here in Canada. Some departments are having some pretty serious cuts, which can lead to layoffs or major restructuring. The area I work for happens to be one where a poor economy has a "good" effect on the department.
There is security as a whole with the public service - again, at least here in Canada. But it does come with caveats. The money is good, but rarely equal to what you could make in the private sector. Because of the need for opacity, you deal with stuff that just wouldn't be a concern for a private company.

It affected me pretty bad since I got my Bachelor's Degree in 2008. The job market has sucked since then.
I haven't had any luck in getting a job yet.

I lost my job when the place I worked at closed down. I've been out of work since April 3rd of this year. Although in another sense I am going to school on the governments dime so hopefully by the time I am done more jobs will be around.

Getting the education (especially with the government paying for it) is a good idea. Even though the job market isn't that great, having a degree in whatever field should at least put you a step ahead of some people applying for the same jobs. Though, that would also depend on what sort of degree you're aiming for and how many people are doing the same thing as you (in the same field), but it should definitely - hopefully - make the search a little easier.
I'm actually looking to go back to school in the near future to get a degree and get out of the position I'm in now. I don't think the meteorology field will be dropping many people in the coming years as there is always a need for people in the weather field.

I'm having a hard time getting off my feet. Not a lot of jobs in my town and I have little to no experience for being a 19 year old looking for a job. Otherwise I'm fortunate enough to not having it affect me too much. Both my parents still have their jobs and we haven't had to struggle too much. I've been very thankful for that. It is just a crummy time for me trying to make my own path because of very little people wanting to hire someone with no experience in the job market when they have so many other choices.

I'm still waiting on my Obama Dollars.
I'm also a government employee - and we've been busier than ever. But I do a lot of employer sponsored health care, so there is some worry here that we'll eventually be out of a job if they nationalize health care and employers start getting rid of their health plans.
