Ever hear an older person say that to you when you are playing in your band, listening to a radio too loud or the bass in your car thumping down the street?
people used to say it to me ALL the fucking time when I was in my early 20's. I would laugh it off, meanwhile the bass in my car would be setting off car alarms 20 feet away. It was really way too much. It also didn't help that I played in a metal band where we cranked the volumne and never wore earplugs.
Well..........fast forward 13 years.
I know have in my right ear this constant ringing that NEVER goes away. Unless I have surgery or some shit (which I dont even know if its possible, i've heard you just have to live with it) I will have to listen to this noise for the rest of my life. Never again will I be able to enjoy complete silence.
It could probably drive a man insane too if you focused on it too much. So now when I sleep I need to have white noise going at all times or else I go bonkers.
So what's the moral of this story? If you are younger and still have a chance to take care of your body, please do so. I was terrible at listening to advice and now I hear this incredibly annoying high pitch in my ear 24/7
I think its called tinnitus
It really fucking sucks btw.

I destroyed most of the hearing in my dads left ear when I was like 9. >.>
Music is just so better when it's load, I think it's really the same principle as people telling me that I'm going to have arthritis when I'm older and me not particularly caring about that either. I crack my neck and back constantly, it makes people cringe.

Jesus, that's awful. I dunno how i'd be able to cope with a constant ringing in my ear, surely there's something they can do about it? Doctors are like miracle workers these days, they can give you new faces and everything. I don't really play music out loud, but if i've got my iPod in or something, I tend to turn it up just a tiny bit off the maxium, guess i'll really reconsider now, listening to music loud isn't really worth any future damage to your hearing. With everyone having MP3's and god knows what these days, i'm prettttyyy certain that there'll be a ton of people affected with what you have in the future, can't count how many kids on my bus to college have their players turned up so you can hear every lyric word for word.

Re: Turn that music down, your gonna go deaf!!!!
I went to see New Found Glory a few months ago, and I was deaf in one ear for about two days afterwards, and had ringing for about a week. It was honestly the loudest thing I'd ever heard.
But I'm one of those guys that goes and stands further back at gigs. I'd rather hear the actual music, than the clatter and din you hear towards the front.
I guess I have my MP3 player quite loud, but it's also situation dependant. If I'm walking by the road, it's louder to drown out the noise of cars, where as if I'm inside, it'll be a bit quieter.

I play my music relatively quietly, especially with headphones. I don't think blasting music when the sound source is right against your ear is that good of an idea lol. I think part of the reason that that's the case is because my grandma was deaf (though from unrelated circumstances). I usually keep the volume at about the halfway point.

I bet New Found Glory aren't as loud as Motorhead.
Saw Motorhead at the O2 in Newcastle and it took a week for my hearing to be fully restored.
And i'm the same as HB, loudish when outside to drown out all the background noise and quiet inside.
