Smoking graphics - Do they work?

I'm talking about the pictures and messages that they put of the cigarette packs these days of such things as a what organs look like as a result of smoking and the same for teeth then on the other side of the packet in big letters, such things as "Smoking kills", well I know all smokers have seen them, they're hard to miss with how blatant they are, but are they just wasting ink?

I don't know of anyone that pays attention to them, they know that they're there but simply turn the packet over so that the images can't be seen and just go about it as they always have.

Does it work at all?

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

I'd say so. Having those types of pictures drilled into my head as a child certainly stopped me from trying them.

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

I think that's the answer. If you are already a smoker you won't quit because of it, but its a good way to put people off trying them.

I don't really agree with scare tactics though.

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

For the most part they don't work, people who smoke are still gonna smoke and know they risk. Most people who don't smoke know the risk and have seen loved ones die from it. I guess for some people who have thoughts about trying it and then see the images it could help.

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

Although I think it was more TV commercials and news reports that put me off rather than the packaging.

That and the fact that I've never understood the appeal.

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

Well. I think in all honesty it is designed for exactly what Postman said. He has it drilled into his head how bad and stupid it is to do in the first place.

Cigarette companies rely on the youth to start up. Most people excuse it from young kids from starting up because they don't know any better, but more importantly the youth don't give a rats ass about their 40 and 50 year old versions of themselves. It's almost impossible to think that far ahead for a youngster. I started at 15 and at the time I used to always say "I'm not addicted. Only weak minded people get addicted" then it moved onto "Oh I'll quit when I am 25." Then "Meh, I'll quit when I am 30"

How many times do you hear of a 30 year old that picked up smoking for the first time?

These ads hopefully scare more kids into staying away than the butts do of grabbing onto people. They definetly aren't designed to make me feel bad. Because trust me, I feel like shit just about everytime I think about what I am doing to myself still smoking.

Btw, I have a quit date set of July 26th next month. Hopefully this time it sticks. (I just love my cigarettes though

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

I feel if you set a date for yourself you are already setting yourself up for failure.

Now onto the topic at hand. I do believe for most people they do work. It's about a 70/30 chance they do work. I see a lot of younger people smoking now and it boggles my mind. I think some tactics they use work. Information is the key. What I really do hate is the truth.com ads, they annoy the piss out of me.

I've stopped smoking for months at a time and always seem to start up again. I always said when they hit $4.00 a pack I would quit and now I am paying about $6.00 a pack. I've smoke since I was 11 and I really wish I could quit.

Re: Smoking graphics - Do they work?

Well, I started smoking at about 14 and didn't give a rats ass about the ads. I smoked for years on and off because I enjoyed it but the negative effects began to outweigh the positive(tho they always do and always have, people just don't care) so I quit. Suprisingly, I was never addicted and had an easy time quitting and haven't looked bad. I still smoke weed of course but looking back smoking cigarettes was pointless. Some people say they smoke them for stress(usually smoking addicts) but what people who say that don't seem to realize is the more you do it the more stress you have when you don't have a cigarette in your mouth.
