We all know how much media has advanced in the past few decades, to an extent where everyone of us will have contact to at least several mediums a day.
We're also aware how powerful the media is. I'm pretty positive every person who has access to the media has been effected by it, whether it be the way they dress, they act, they talk, their values, morals, beliefs, etc.
The question is, is the media really controlling us? Are we living in a society where we our decisions are effected by the media, and no longer have real control over our thinking?
This may sound a stupid question, but given some thought, I think you'd come to realise we have decayed as a society. And most of what we do is not for ourselves, but what the media wants us to.
I think the media does control a large quantity of the population. Especially since we have had very large corporations in which the corporation who owns a media outlet also owns other companies which creates a conflict of interest.

The media has a very selective way of chosing what they report. That's why I don't watch the news anymore. You never hear about anything that's good in the world, all you ever hear about it how fucked up things are. The idea is consumerism. Making people afraid makes them spend. The media is nothing more than a tool for corperations and government to convince people they are not happy, comfortable, or safe in any way.
There's nothing wrong with keeping up with current events, but I tend to exercise my own judgment when following the press, something unfortunately a lot of people in the world are completely incapable of doing.
I think we underestimate how much the media really effects us. The way we talk, dress, act, and think is all effected by the media. The media has done extensive study into how people think and is using mind control to alter people's thinking. We can also blame the media's for the downgraded, selfish and shallow society we live in today with the similar ideologies they portray to the people. They are forcing people to be a certain someone and because of that they spend and spend in the hope that they will live the 'perfect' life the media portrays, but less money just leads to depression, and media companies get their pockets full of our money.
As Dakstang pointed out, its interesting to note media outlets also own other media companies. Time Warner, for example, is a great franchise in the media industry, it owns several newspapers and magazines, so it can portray the same ideology without people even realising they are buying products from the same organisation.

You can't have a discussion on media without Noam Chomsky, manufacturing consent, Joe 6 pack all that is all Chomsky. He is the man on modern media.

I wouldn't say they control us, but they definately have an influence over us. You only have to look at Swine Flu to see that. Completely blown out of proportion. Newspapers are becoming especially bad for this, since they have to rely more on opinion nowadays. Sadly, a lot of people don't know a lot more than what they are told, so their "opinions" are based on what they read/hear.

It is the discussion. If you don't know who Noam Chomsky is you can't have a discussion about media. It's that simple.
Well I don't know who he is and I am having a discussion about media..
Maybe you'd want to tell us who he is and the relevance in this topic, instead of just whoring out his name, because that's not adding to the discussion.
