Facebook owns the rights to everything you post on it

Did you know that everything you've loaded up into your profile (personal pictures, etc.) belongs to Facebook, even after you've closed your account?

That's what it says in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you opened your account, apparently.

The Consumerist recently uncovered this disturbing info and it's causing quite a stir.

So, what does this mean?

Basically, Facebook can do whatever the hell they want with YOUR STUFF.

And, they can do so WITHOUT your permission.

For example, they can license your personal pictures out to companies, make a shizzle of money and don't have to give you a dime.

Sounds really, really shitty and sooo shady!!!!!

I actually heard that awhile ago. Can't recall where, but it was to do with someone complaining about their profile pic being used in online advertising for Facebook or something, and then being told they had given permission to Facebook when they signed up.

That's scary for Facebook users. This should urge people not to ever sign up for Facebook because they can snatch pics out of your private profile and use it for their sick pleasure.

Ah, who gives a toss, people don't sign up to facebook to make money from advertising. I don't know what's normally in cyber small print, but I never read it anyway, it's not like your signing your life away to them.

Oh good god, stop complaining about small stuff already. This is nothing, absolutely nothing at all, and they do this. They don't do this because they want to steal your stuff, they do this because they have to for legal reasons.

Do you really think that they want to "own" your content? Of course not. They need the rights to it to use it to display things like your own profile. Even Myspace has a (limited) version of this in their terms, stating THEY can do whatever they want with your publicly posted stuff.

In the age of lawsuits over any pathetic thing, this is a legal necessity. Since you're not paying to use their services to begin with, it's not like you have any rights there anyways. The only way you have any right to any content you post is if you post it on your own website, on servers owned by yourself, with software developed by yourself.

Pretty much every social networking site has a similar policy. Even most large message boards have clauses in their TOS that allow them to take ownership of anything posted to their servers. This is nothing new really. I'm not sure why people would feel entitled to privacy when they're on a public website....
