My computer keeps shutting down for seemingly no reason. 80% of the time it'd be when its a lot of speed etc is being used but the other time its just goes off.

Examples:
Converting .avi to DVD
Converting .avi to .mov (different programmes)
Burning DVD to Disc
Burning .avi to Disc
Importing a CD into i-tunes
Watching a video on WMP
Downloading
Surfing the net


Anything i can do before i try a restore? Tanx if anyone helps.

Did you recently do a Windows Update?

Try restoring back to the previous state before that update if so.

I think its turned off and its happened twice already today.

Can you give more info?

What's your OS...what are you doing to convert these files?

What is your screen showing before it shuts down...etc etc

Im running on XP.
The first time it happened i was using convertXtoDVD but its happened on others since. It wasent the first time i used that either as ive done a few DVDs with it.
It just goes off like the battery has died or the power has gone. No warning. I thought maybe it wasent plugged in properly but everything is right.
If i turn it on again straight away it shuts down again. I have to leave it for about 2 minutes before turning it back on again.
I did a virus scan but it said i was clean.
I still have about 30GB free of 42GB so i doubt thats a problem.

My laptop keeps doing the same thing. Usually when I'm looking at loads of pictures on Monks. It makes whirry noises like it's trying to do stuff and then just dies.

Poor thing.

Im on a laptop aswell and usually have internet open but not always. Hmmm im starting to blame this site lol. The whirry noises ive never got except once or twice when burning a cd.

Are you running Xp Service Pack 2?

My PC does that at home.

I have ran several virus scans and they all say it is clean.

I have pretty much given up on it. I think my hard-drive will have to be reformatted for about the third time.

It is impossible to keep viruses off of computers.

It depends on where you go and what you download.

I would recommend downloading a free firewall.


It helps alert you to changes being made to your PC and you can block stuff that you arent aware of.

The one windows provides with XP sux IMO.
