Manchester City have finalised the signing of Netherlands international Nigel de Jong on a four-and-a-half year contract from German club Hamburg.

The 24-year-old has moved for an undisclosed fee after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

However, German media reports that Mark Hughes's side may have paid as much as £18m to sign him.

The midfielder has a clause in his contract that would have allowed him to leave Hamburg in the summer for £1.8m.

De Jong has played 66 Bundesliga games for Hamburg since joining from Ajax for £1.2m in 2006.
A very classy signing right there, yet another product of the famous Ajax academy.

I have to say from what I have seen of the boy which is not much I'm not going to lie to you, he is a really cracking player he made sure Van Basten had to leave some big names out of that Dutch squad at the Euros and played his part well could be a player to really bolster City's credentials.

The only thing is, with City trying to go with an attacking mentality, De Jong is a defensive player.

Pretty sure they need defenders more than attackers. Why the hell didn't they get Palacios? He would have been ideal.

De Jong is good. Not £18m good though, but I guess that doesn't matter to them.

well they need people to defend while their attacking they also play Kompany in the same position, you cannot throw 6 men forward at once some people need to stay back even with an attacking mentality.

Kompany hasn't been very good. People are forgetting that De Jong is unproven at this level. The Bundesliga and especially the Eredivisie are not comparable to the Premiership. Sure, he has potential, but you never know how he is going to fair in the Prem until you see him play in it.

Kompany is a natural central defender, sure he CAN play where Hughes used him but why wouldn't you use him in his natural position?

Yeah but he has the experience of playing in a major international tournament & getting to the semi final stages which is more than a lot of players can say who play in the premiership.
