Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was arrested early Monday in connection with an alleged assault at a bar that left a man hospitalized with facial injuries.
Police detained the England midfielder at 2:30 a.m. (0230 GMT) in Southport along with five other men after the brawl and remained in police custody, a person close to the investigation said on condition of anonymity. British police do not publicly name suspects unless charges are brought.
In the fracas outside the Lounge Inn, the bar's 34-year-old disc jockey sustained cuts to his forehead and a broken tooth but was later released from the hospital, another police spokesman said.
Officers only began interviewing the suspects Monday afternoon and expected the questioning to continue until late in the evening.
Gerrard's wife Alex Curran was seen near the police station where the player is being held, but drove off without answering reporters' questions.
Spots of blood and shards of broken glass were visible on the floor of the Lounge Inn, which was closed Monday.
The modern restaurant, which becomes a nightclub later in the evening, in the seaside town of Southport is less than 10 miles north of Gerrard's home in Formby in Merseyside.
Gerrard was celebrating Liverpool extending its lead to three points atop the Premier League standings after he scored twice and set up another goal in a 5-1 victory at Newcastle, while second-place Chelsea was held 2-2 by Fulham.
"Merseyside Police is investigating an assault that took place in the early hours of Monday ... on Bold Street in Southport," police said in a statement, without naming Gerrard. "Six men were arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault on Lord Street."
The other men held are not believed to be footballers, but are from the Huyton area of Liverpool, where Gerrard was brought up and spotted by Liverpool scouts at the age of eight playing for Whiston Juniors.
Liverpool, which next faces Preston on Saturday in the FA Cup, was making no comment.
Gerrard led Liverpool to the Champions League title in 2005 and has played 70 times for England.
His status as one of the world's best midfield talents was recognized by his fellow international professionals in October when he was named in FIFPro's team-of-the-year lineup.

Poor Gerrard. I wonder what this will do for his career, if anything. He probably won't be charged with anything though.
I read about this earlier, its pretty bad for Stevie, there was three other men involved, probabally bloody everton fans To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

And when there is no hope,
"I'll smoke some crack, I'll shoot some dope!"
When theres no enemies,
"I sit and stare at my T.V.
and in my ignorance,
I'll be a slave and sycophant!"
I was thinking to myself this morning, what could possibly derail Liverpool from mounting a serious championship challenge this season, and then I see this!! There is a god!!!
Seriously though, I doubt much will be done about it. He’ll probably get a slap on the wrist, and told to do some PR work with deprived kids, to show he really is a role model.
Plus the victim will be wanting an out of court settlement out of it all, so he'll make the most of it no doubt.
It seems out of character of Gerrard in my eyes. I sortof hope he doesn't get anything too serious a punishment or Liverpool will have an excuse for when they finish 3rd.
I noticed The Sun said he could go down for 5 years for it, but then again, that's The Sun so expect to see him getting nothing too serious.

Re: Gerrard Arresed for Alleged Assult
lolz, he fucked up a DJ?
You see what Nickelback's music can drive people to....
But as has been alluded to, money works miracles. I doubt that this will keep him from the pitch for too long, or that it will compromise L'pool's aspirations.
and I'm an Everton supporter....
