Ricky Sbragia was appointed permanent manager by Sunderland on Saturday after a successful monthlong spell as caretaker of the Premier League club.
A string of impressive performances after rising from the coaching staff as a temporary replacement for Roy Keane, who resigned Dec. 4, has earned Sbragia his first managerial job on an 18-month contract.
The 52-year-old Scot has led the team to two wins and a draw in four games.
"We have been taken aback by how easily he has slotted into the managerial role and are really heartened by his intelligent approach in dealing with the players and the day-to-day rigors of the job," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn said. "Ricky took up the reins when we were at low ebb and has without doubt revitalized the club.
"He is the unanimous choice of the executive board and will receive every support in his new role. The ownership of the club have also fully endorsed the appointment."
The decision was made Saturday morning after Friday's 0-0 draw with Blackburn, whose new manager Sam Allardyce had touted himself for the Sunderland job, and before the team traveled to Liverpool for Sunday's match against Everton.
Financial details were not disclosed by Sunderland, whose major shareholder is Texas businessman Ellis Short. The club is in 14th place in the 20-team standings, with 22 points - but remains just two points clear of the relegation zone.
"I'm delighted to have been offered the opportunity to manage a club as big as Sunderland and I'm relishing the challenge ahead," Sbragia said. "My main priority is moving up the Premier League table and ensuring we have unity and stability at the club.
"I've been extremely pleased by the commitment shown by the players to date and the support we have all received from the fans."

Anyway, we will see where this goes, but I'm guessing Sunderland will still go down this season, sorry Mikk.

And when there is no hope,
"I'll smoke some crack, I'll shoot some dope!"
When theres no enemies,
"I sit and stare at my T.V.
and in my ignorance,
I'll be a slave and sycophant!"
How would it be sad? They haven't done anything to make it "sad".
God knows, dont listen to me, Sunderland suck, they should go down To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. /sarcasm

Good, i'm pleased he is in charge, the players are playing better under him and we are getting results.
Little disapointed with us not getting a proven manager but Ricky is doing a great job and can't ask for much more than 7 points from his first 4 games.
And i knew he would of been given the job once i read he was being allowed to make signings in january.

That always happens under a caretaker manager, when Stuart Pearce was appointed the Man City caretaker booss he turned our season around and nearly got us into Euroope, then he got appointed full time boss and he nearly sent us down, twice.
