Sunderland have parted company with manager Roy Keane, skysports.com understands.
Keane had been locked in talks over a new deal, which he had refused to sign until he was fully happy with the terms.
Now the Irish legend is understood to have walked away from the job, following weeks of speculation about his position.
It is understood the players and staff were told about Keane's departure on Thursday morning.
Keane took charge in August 2006 and he made an immediate impact as he guided Sunderland to the Championship title the following May.
Last season the club consolidated their place in the top flight and Keane's task this term was to make an assault on the top half of the table.
With that in mind, Sunderland backed Keane by spending nearly £30million on new players with the likes of Djibril Cisse, Pascal Chimbonda, Anton Ferdinand, El-Hadji Diouf and George McCartney all coming in.
Coupled with the £30million-plus spent the previous summer, expectation levels were high on Wearside.
However, despite a morale-boosting Wear-Tyne victory over rivals Newcastle - their first since 1980 - Sunderland's form and place in the league has plummeted.
Just two wins in ten league games has put them in the bottom three, and speculation has been rife in the North East over the last month that Keane was ready to walk away from the club.
And now the former Manchester United captain has left his first managerial post, leaving Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn with the task of finding somebody to guide the club to Premier League safety
Doesn't really shed good light on Keane leaving in this manner. He should have been trying to get Sunderland to safety this season (which I think he would have done), before leaving, if he really had every intention of doing so.
Especially after the faith the board showed in him to give him all that cash.

He's a botteler pure and simple. Look at his recent(-ish) history and it shows it. He abandoned his country in 2002. Then when it got tough at United he did everything he could to get out of there. He has made a lot of bad buys and to be honest, i dont see a job for him at this level. Maybe as a coach but not as a manager. As a manager he is basically a more agressive Kevin Keegan.

Very selfish of Keano in my opinion. Sunderland are not in a terrible situation. The league is so tight, that they could string a few wins together and be in mid table.
It's at times like this you find out how good you actually are as a manager. Walking away is not the answer. Not in this situation anyway. His chariman is a proper footballing man, Nial Quinn knows how tough it is, so he wouldn't have fired Keane.
I wonder who'll be the next manager of Sunderland (Mikk needen't apply!)
Mikk will be applying for the Newcastle job anyway. It's much easier being in charge of a team you dont support than one you do. Of course Mikk will take the easy option To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I wish, i'd love to manage them.
In a way i'm disapointed however i'm relieved.
There was too much indecision from Keane which affected him and the players.
If Keane had signed a new contract then the club and players would of gotten a needed boost as there wouldn't be anymore uncertainty.
Don't like the timing of it though, big game at the weekend which we aren't expected to get anything from and lose but now i think its going to be double figure score now.
As for the new boss, quite a few names going around, personally i know Bilic has stated he wants to stay with croatia and its why he didn't take the west ham job but i believe he could be tempted away.
As for others, i'd quite like the idea of maybe avram grant or aidy boothroyd or at a long shot, Jose To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
And of course i'd go to the mags, i'd get them relegated To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
