Chelsea have sacked manager Avram Grant after only eight months in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Grant has been under severe pressure in West London since replacing Jose Mourinho last September.
And the Israeli, who steered Chelsea to a second-placed Premier League finish, has now been handed his marching orders after the Blues ended the 2007/08 campaign without a trophy.
Grant's last game in charge of Chelsea was the UEFA Champions League final penalty shoot-out defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Chelsea football club can confirm that Avram Grant has had his contract terminated today (Saturday 24th May). This follows meetings over the last two days.
"Everybody at Chelsea FC would like to thank Avram for his contribution since taking over as manager last September.
"We will now be concentrating all our efforts on identifying a new manager for Chelsea and there will be no further comment until that appointment is made."
The likes of Internazionale manager Roberto Mancini and Frank Rijkaard will now be strongly tipped to take over at Chelsea.
I think this is disgraceful, his head was on the chopping board for weeks even though he got Chelsea winning (alot) and playing attractive football. The guy only lost twice in thirty five games a far better record than his predecessor, who ever takes this job will need to follow in the footsteps of two great managers and deal with an incompetant chairman. When Wengar leaves I hope we pick up Grant as our manager because I would love him to coach my team Arsenal To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. It is harsh on him but he hasent done that much. Put anyone in charg of that team & they would do well. Grant's biggest signing has been a massive flop (Anelka) & he failed to motivate his players when it mattered. The Chelsea team got so close despite Grant being in too deep.
I really hope that last sentance you said was a joke.

Avram Grant was never the long term answer for Chelsea. He was only temporarily in charge of Chelsea because all the men they wanted to take over from Mourinho were in contract and in the middle of the footballing season. So getting their man was going to be very difficult, if nay on impossible.
Now the situation has changed, Eriksson and Rijkaard out of work (the former more or less) and Guus Hiddink would have seen Russia through the European Championships, so he’d also be a realistic option.
Grant has done a good job at Chelsea, in many ways he has overachieved during his reign, but he is not part of Abramovich’s long term vision. He was only a stop gap until the end of the season. Abramovich wants the big name coach, and the big name players at Stamford Bridge… and as we all know, Mr Abramovich always gets what he wants… well all except a European Cup!!! Ha ha.
The only thing that is baffiling me after reading the bbc site is why did they give him a four year contract in the first place when they probably knew he wouldn't be there past the end of the season??

Daren makes a solid point. Anyone could go to Chelsea and do well. Which is not good enough, the fact of the matter is is that they didn't win shyte this year, which is not acceptable for a team like Chelsea, at least with the kind of squad they have....and Will...if Avram Grant ever managered Arsenal, there would be riots.
I wouldn't go so far to call it disgusting. Unfair maybe, most certainly expected. If they sacked Mourhino after leading them to 2 titles and assorted cups they were bound to sack a no name coach for winning them nothing, despite how close he got

To be fair, when Grant took over, to even think Chelsea would be challenging for the title this year seemed so unlikely. However he managed to make the title race go to the last day of the season, something it looked like Mourinho wouldn't have been doing.
Plus, he can't be blamed for Wednesday's defeat when it came down to the luck of a penalty shoot-out.
Definitely an unfair sacking, but as said, it was always coming.
Whether Grant had Chelsea playing attractive football as Will said is well and truly up for debate as I believe they were still grinding the same old 1-0 results out for most of the season with a few thrilling games thrown in. Of course, this wasn't Grant's team so that could be a reason why, as alot of the personnel within the Chelsea squad will never play attractive football.
