England international midfielder Joey Barton has been jailed for six months after pleading guilty to charges of assault and affray.
Barton has suffered a series of off-field problems during his career.
Barton, who plays for Premier League side Newcastle United, was arrested by police in his native Liverpool after an incident in the city center on December 27 last year.
The 25-year-old had been involved in a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant after a night out in the north-west of England city.
Barton spent the New Year behind bars after being refused bail but was later released to rejoin his Newcastle teammates and was a regular in the closing matches of the season.
He entered his guilty plea last month to Liverpool Crown Court but details were only released on Tuesday due to reporting restrictions.
His form with previous club Manchester United saw him given his England chance under previous manager Steve McClaren, but he has not featured since his big money move to Newcastle last summer.

He deserves to pay for what he has done. Personally I wouldn't be bothered if he never plays pro football again. He's abused his status as a role model, and the privallage of playing in the one of the worlds top league.
Way to punish the guy. With good behaviour he'll get out just in time for the season to start. The whole family are scumbags and criminals apparently, suits Newcastle rather well To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
