Gerrard Named As Captain

Gerrard will lead England out at Wembley in his 64th cap after Capello opted to name the Liverpool midfielder his first captain since taking charge.

Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen were also thought to have been candidates to be handed the armband, but Capello has decided to name Gerrard as skipper.

John Terry, who was skipper during Steve McClaren's tenure, is unavailable to face Switzerland due to injury.

I think JT'll get the armband back upon his return to the team.

Good chance for Gerrard to show his ability at captaining England though.

I think that Steven Gerrard will probably be named the permanent England captain come the world cup qualifiers.

He commands respect for the dressing room, and you hardly hear of any off field antics of his. From the outside, John Terry seems like a bit of a jack the lad, one of the boys – hosting parties around his house, gambling nights, and enjoying general banter. That is all fine for a club captain, since they do need some ‘down time’ during the season. But for an international captain it is not good behaviour. I think Capello will favour the more clean cut Steven Gerrard.

Isn't the "story" that Rio, Gerrard and Terry are all going to get a crack at the Captaincy in front of Fabio and that he'll look to make a real "as permanent as can be" decision by the time of the qualifiers?
