Beginning with the 2008 season, Sprint will replace Nextel as title sponsor of NASCAR's premiere racing series, multiple high-ranking industry sources told ESPN.com on condition of anonymity.
The series will be known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, sources said.
NASCAR declined comment.
Dean Kessel, Sprint's NASCAR marketing director, denied the claims, and said Sprint/Nextel is still sorting the proposition out with NASCAR. Kessel also said that multiple outstanding details must be finalized internally before a decision can be made either way.
This would mark the third time in four seasons NASCAR's Cup Series experienced a sponsorship-based name change.
From 1972-2003, the Cup Series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds tobacco through its Winston cigarette brand. Then, starting in 2004, Nextel assumed the naming rights to the most popular racing series in America.
Sprint and Nextel agreed to a $36 billion merger in December 2004. Marty Smith covers Nextel Cup racing for ESPN.com.

The Sprint Cup, It doesn't sound right, I don't really care even if it is a cigarette company but the Winston Cup sounded better. I just hate the name change. I mean are they gonna change the Chase for the Cup to the Sprint for the cup? It just doesn't work for me, it's not an aesthetic name by any means.

I can understand getting up in arms about renaming the Stanley Cup or the Lombardi Trophy, or renaming Fenway Park or Lambeau Field -- but this is on par with the Continental Tire Bowl being renamed the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
lol to be fair, NASCAR is extremely popular in some parts of the United States, but I get what you're saying.. They've never had a great name for their trophy anyway..
I don't really care though. Nascar is boring....I hope my neighbors don't read this, or I will be challenged to a fight!!

LOL I know some people who like racing, even NASCAR from time to time, but more so drift racing or street racing.. however, I've never met someone who is insane about NASCAR. Probably because I live in the northeast.
Quick story, a couple weeks ago I went to a local speedway to watch NASCAR-type racing but I don't remember much because after being there for about a half hour I was hammered..
That might be the key. Just another reason to get trashed.
