Claudio Ranieri would appear to have ruled out the prospect of staying with Parma by stating he is keen to recreate his "Chelsea miracle" at Manchester City.

The Italian has an offer in front of him to extend his stay at Parma, after guiding the club to safety in Serie A.

He said over the weekend that he would in all probability remain with the Gialloblu, but this now looks unlikely after he confirmed a desire to return to England with City.

The 55-year-old is the favoured choice of Thaksin Shinawatra who is in talks to gain control of City and Ranieri is relishing the prospect of building a strong side at Eastlands.

"The Manchester City challenge reminds me of the experience I had at Chelsea where without spending £1, we built a good team," Ranieri told Gazzetta dello Sport. "It was an achievement that convinced (Roman) Abramovich to buy the club.

"I created the Chelsea miracle from nothing. Then, mountains of money came as well as a selection of top players."

Ranieri admits he is keen on a return to England and feels City can challenge rivals Manchester United.

"Why England again? Because at this time, English football is a fascinating window that hypnotises you," he said.

"Here (in England), there are so many champions, seven or eight teams at the top level just as Italy had some time ago.

"Unfortunately for us, Italian football, we are poorer, despite Milan's extraordinary victory in the Champions League.

"To return to England means to be at the centre of something important.

"The idea is to face Manchester United as soon as possible and be at the same level as them in the standings."

Re: Claudio targets City 'miracle'

He's a nice sounding guy, and he's built good teams at Chelsea and Valencia in the past only to leave before they achieved anything.

I can't help thinking that he's not a guy that will ever win very much. Seems to lack a ruthless streak.

Ranieri is a great manager, he did a great job at Chelsea I know that, I'm not sure about Valencia though, I don't follow La Liga.

Re: Claudio targets City 'miracle'

I think he did a good job at Chelsea. It could be argued that his investments of Roman's cash were better than Jose's.

However, history suggests he lacks the cunning and/or nasty streak to be a trophy winner.

Having said that......this is Man City we're talking about. If he gets them in the top 10 and gets a decent Cup run then he'll be a hero!

The Tinkerman is a legend, if only for his gracefull exit of Chelsea. He didn't winge or complain, he just got on with his job untill he was asked to leave. It'd be great to see such a character back in the Premiership.

I think he's an average manager at best. He's always had some money and good players in his teams at Chelsea and Valencia. Parma have struggled and just avoided relegation. He'll be in for a tough time at Eastlands.

To defend him (a little) his best work was at Valencia when he basically built the team there (before his time at Chelsea). Rafa Benitez took on his work at Valencia and raked in the trophies.

He went back to Valencia a couple of years back and had a dreadful return however.

Though he has done a good job with Parma. They were sunk before he went there, and have pretty much survived now (I think!!)

Ranieri resigns from Parma post

Claudio Ranieri has resigned as manager of Italian Serie A side Parma.

The former Chelsea manager is expected to eventually take over at Manchester City, who sacked Stuart Pearce at the end of the season.

The 56-year-old Italian took over the struggling Parma side in February and guided them to safety, with a 12th-place finish.

His impressive stint has reportedly convinced the City board he is the man to take over from Pearce.

A statement from Parma said: "Claudio Ranieri has informed the club of his intention to leave his role as first-team coach.

"The club would like to thank him for the precious work he carried out, which resulted in keeping Parma in Serie A. We wish him success for the future."

Ranieri told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport: "The Manchester City challenge reminds me of the experience I had at Chelsea where without spending £1, we built a good team.

"I created the Chelsea miracle from nothing. My achievement convinced Roman Abramovich to buy the club. Then, mountains of money came as well as a selection of top players."

However, it could be the end of next week at the earliest before he is formally installed at Eastlands.

Talks over a deal for former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to buy the 29% stake of chairman John Wardle and business partner David Makin by the end May have dragged on.

The paperwork is now being handled by the former Thailand Prime Minister's lawyers.
