Success or Performance
Never sure where to put these generic sports threads, and I don't want to keep repeating myself in both forums, so I'll just leave this in US Sports (since we have more American posters) and hope the UK'ers (and Worldwides) see it too.
Now sure, sometimes you could get both with your sports teams, but if you had to choose between supporting a team that were driven, succesful but by in large not entertaining OR you could choose a side that always have the best games, are like everyones second team because of their style, but are not winners, who would you choose?
Yes the age old success or performance question!!
Since I don't know US Sports I can only give examples in soccer, Holland had an incredible team in the 1970's, everyone loved them, they made two World Cup Finals in that decade but both times lost to ruthless opposition (both times to the host nations). Now everyone still remembers them as a truly great team, but ultimately not winners, but I don't think anyone particularly remembers the German or Argentinian teams that defeated them.
So the thing that winners always say "look it up in the history books, it'll always say I won", does that truly hold any sway. Sure it'll say you won, but anyone who knows anything of the sport won't remember you with any fondness and people who look at history books in 50 years won't care who you were anyway.......

The New England Patriots are CLASSIC examples of this. Aside from a couple superstars its mainly made up of hardcore dudes that just love to play football.
Alot of times not alot of stars translates to "boring" football. The Patriots have won 3 of the last 6 superbowls and often times are called boring and dry.
I personally don't care if my favorite teams win by 1 or 100 points. As long as they get the win I couldnt care less if half the crowd was yawning through the whole thing.
Personally my feeling is that in the United States, flash and showoffs generally finish 2nd to the hardworking nose to the grind types of teams 9 out of 10 times.

Yeah, along the same lines as DD, my favourite hockey team is the Vancouver Canucks.
Until this year, they were one of the most exciting, high-scoring hockey teams in the NHL -- but defensive and goaltending collapses constantly did them in. After missing the playoffs last year they fired their coach and traded star offensive player Todd Bertuzzi, acquiring goalie Roberto Luongo and signing a defensive-minded head coach in Alain Vigneault. The result is a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 hockey games, but I can't belive there's a more valuable hockey player to his team than Roberto Luongo, and the Canucks are in first place by a healthy margin. If Luongo gets hot, they could do serious damage in the playoffs this year.
I'll definitely take the wins too. Basically, every sports fan's preferences should go like this:
1. Win and look good doing so (1999 St. Louis Rams, 2006 Colts)
2. Win and be boring (San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, New england Patriots)
3. Fall short of a championship but look good doing so (Phoenix Suns, early 90's Buffalo Bills)
4. Fall short of a championship and be boring (mid-90's New York Knicks)

DannyDiamond you say the Patriots are the classic example of this, which may be true. But I would like to point out that the 86 years prior to 2004, the Red Sox were the equivalent to Tylers Holland example. The Sox were a team that everyone loved and many times made it to the playoffs and had heartbreaking losses.. Losing in a couple of game 7's in the World Series and of course the one game playoff with the Yanks. My point is that all that performance, without the success, made the success in 2004 that much sweeter. So if Holland wins the Cup in 2010, I would bet that those near misses, will make it that much more worth it.
Did any of that make sense, or am I just rambling while trying to look busy at work???
I dont know if it's just the Yankee fan in me talking, but I always thought the Cubs were more of the "lovable losers" than the Red Sox.

When the cubs win it will be sweet but it can't compare to the sox pulling off something that had not been done in pro sports against their rivals, the sox made the yanks into the biggest choke artisits in the history of sports and thinking about it still makes me smile!
