There's a wee spot in Europe

Made up for Rory, hopefully he goes on and gets a major or two this year.

And Tiger finally wins an official PGA Tour event for the first time since the sex scandal. Little omen for the Masters, every time Tiger won at Augusta, he won the event he played in his previous outing.

I am so pumped for the Masters right now. Rory, Luke and Tiger are all firing pretty hot right now, throw in Phil, Kaymer and Westy and this should just be fantastic. The real showdown everybody wants is Tiger/Rory though. I would mark so hard for that!

Would there be enough interest in golf here for a Masters discussion thread?

I actually think it would be better in the North American section.

I'll be back from Miami half way through the Masters. I'll probably post about it. Got really into the golf this past year, especially the majors.

Re: General Non Football Sports Chat

Stephen Hendry has retired from tournament snooker, the seven-times world champion announced on Tuesday night, after losing 13-2 to Stephen Maguire in the world championship quarter-finals at the Crucible.

"I only told two or three people, but this is me finished from tournament snooker," Hendry said. "It was quite an easy decision. There's a few reasons. The schedule didn't help.

"The fact that I'm not playing the snooker I want to play didn't help. The fact I'm not enjoying practice doesn't help.

"I want to do other things. I've got a lot of commitments now in China, which I've signed up for, and I can't do that and play snooker because I would never be at home. The time is right for me. If I'd have won the title it would have been an even better way to go out. I'm delighted I made a maximum here, that's why I was more animated than normal when making it. I was delighted to do it on my last appearance here."

Hendry beat Stuart Bingham in the first round at the world championship this year, firing a 147 break in the process, and then knocked out the reigning champion, John Higgins, in round two.

Retirement, though, was always at the back of his mind, with Hendry knowing whoever beat him would be the last man to do so. That player turned out to be Maguire who said: "I'm shocked. I totally wasn't expecting that there. I don't know why [he is retiring]. I'm speechless.

"He's left a great legacy. He's the best player to ever pick up a cue in my eyes. It's going to take someone to win a lot of tournaments to equal him."

The 42-year-old Hendry went on to explain his long-held plans to quit the sport. "It was not a spur-of-the-moment thing," he said. "I thought about it last year but two or three months ago I just decided enough was enough."

This was Hendry's 27th consecutive appearance at the world championship, having lost to Willie Thorne on his debut in 1986. He was world champion in 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999, and reaching further finals in 1997 and 2002.

Reflecting on his favourite Crucible memories, Hendry said: "I've had so many it's hard to pinpoint special ones. My first win here, obviously the seventh world title, making maximums, I could write a book on the memories I've had here."

He insisted it was no time to shed a tear. "No, not really. I've never been the most emotional person even when I win. It's sad that I won't play here again. I love playing here, but no, it's a relief as much as anything."

England's Jimmy White paid tribute to the Scot, who beat White in four Crucible finals in 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1994. They have retained a keen rivalry despite drifting down the rankings. "He was and is an unbelievable snooker player and has nothing to prove I hope he enjoys his retirement he really deserves it," said White.

"He's always put snooker first, been a model professional, credit to the game and I'll see him in the legends tour this year for more battles. I thank him sincerely for some of the best matches and memories of my own career. I'm not sure his records will ever be equalled."

Shaun Murphy, the 2005 world champion, wrote on Twitter: "Most successful snooker player of all time, Stephen Hendry retires. Can't believe it."

The former world No3 Neal Foulds added: "Probably the greatest snooker player ever. I wish him well with whatever he does outside of playing."

Elsewhere on day one of the quarter-finals at the Crucible, Ronnie O'Sullivan trailed Australia's Neil Robertson 5-3 after their opening session, Ali Carter was ahead by the same score against the Welsh qualifier Jamie Jones and Matthew Stevens led Ryan Day 11-5.
One of the all-time greats retired last night. One second he was talking about being capable of still winning the World Title after stuffing Higgins and next he's thumped and retires.

He's clearly been keen to retire for a while now having mentioned it the past couple of seasons. Makes sense now with having to play in the more frequent events. Disappointing final defeat but nice for him to get a 147 in his final tournament.

    Anyway, c'mon the Rocket!

David Chisora vs David Haye is on!

David Haye and Dereck Chisora are to face each other in a fight sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation on 14 July at Upton Park.

At a heated news conference, the British heavyweights exchanged insults as Haye vowed to beat Chisora.

The two fighters were involved in a brawl following Chisora's defeat by Vitali Klitschko in Munich in February.

The British Boxing Board of Control will not sanction the fight because neither man holds a British licence.

Speaking at the conference, where the two fighters were separated by a steel fence, Haye said: "He is the ideal opponent for me. I am so glad he has got a good chin because if he didn't have a good chin he would be blasted out in first round.

"I tried to knock him out in Munich and this is the opportunity to shut him up."

The 31-year-old Haye added: "This is definitely personal. We genuinely don't like each other. He has threatened to break my jaw, he has threatened to slap me.

"This fight is about eradicating boxing of an idiot. I will give him a nice, slow, concussive beating."

Chisora, who was surrounded by eight security guards, said: "I don't like him.

"Talk is cheap now. That was a lucky shot he hit me with in Munich. Your talk is cheap. You always talk but you don't deliver in the ring."

The two men, whose news-conference clash three months ago is still being investigated by Munich police, revealed they had seen each other in London recently, with Chisora accusing Haye of having "pulled a knife". Haye responded: "I was eating a steak. It was in a restaurant."

Chisora had his licence withdrawn after a number of controversial incidents before and after the Klitschko fight - but he has appealed against the decision.

Among the controversies, the 28-year-old slapped Klitschko at the weigh-in and spat water at the Ukrainian's brother Wladimir before the contest.

Haye relinquished his licence when he retired in October last year, three months after losing his WBA title to Wladimir in Hamburg.

Chisora's manager Frank Warren had previously said he would not go ahead with a fight between the two boxers.

However, he said he had changed his mind because Chisora's appeal against his licence withdrawal had been "pushed back to July".

Warren said: "What [Chisora] did was stupid and there should be some sort of punishment. But he will be out of action for six months and will lose money. Why should he not make a living?"

Chisora was granted a licence to fight by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation but Warren added that "a number of commissions" had been willing to do so.

Warren said he would not be taking a commission from Chisora for the fight, but would make money as a "shareholder" in the BoxNation subscription channel that will air the fight.

When asked whether holding the event might threaten his own licence as a promoter with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC), Warren said he hoped the organisation would not hold it against him.

"What I'm doing is legal and lawful," he said. "I have a managerial contract with Chisora, I have legal obligations to him and I won't have these compromised by the British Boxing Board of Control.

"When they made their decision, they said he was able to apply for a licence in another jurisdiction. That was said at the hearing, and that is what he's done."

Rival boxing promoter Frank Maloney told the BBC the fight "undermines the authority" of the BBBoC.

He said: "It's like the [English] FA. Would we see the Luxembourg FA coming over to the UK and starting their own league?

"If these two had not had the punch-up, no-one would talk about them."

He also said the BBBoC had "handled it wrong" and should have banned Chisora completely, instead of refusing to grant him a licence.

"If he was banned, the boards in Europe would have to follow and not give him a licence," he said.

Fantastic, hopefully it'll live up to the hype.
