Britain's David Haye beat giant Russian Nikolay Valuev on points to be crowned WBA heavyweight champion in Nuremberg.
The Londoner, who gave away seven stone to his opponent, started steadily but struggled to land any telling hits.
However, Haye kept working hard and almost knocked over the Russian with a powerful punch in the final round.
But Haye, 29, won a majority victory by 114-114 116-112 116-112 to become Britain's first world heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 2003.
Haye, 29, carried a record of 22 wins (21KOs) and one defeat into the contest against the 7ft champion, who had also suffered just one defeat in his 52 fights with a total of 34 knockouts.
"I think I've almost certainly broken my hand but it's a small price to pay," Haye told BBC Radio 5 live.
"I caught him with a right in the second or third and let me tell you his head is solid, it felt like a brick. I just couldn't use it from there on in.
"Here I am, heavyweight champion of the world and I'm loving it. I'm going to clean up the division."

I'm no major fan of boxing, but as he's a Millwall supporter, I've followed him from the beginning. Felt proud for him last night, winning that. A Millwall supporter as World Heavyweight Champion... whatever next? To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
Watched it at a mates, about 30 of us in one room. Great atmosphere. I hope he comes to Millwall, and goes on the pitch. I think he'd get a good reception. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

This was a fairly pathetic match. For several rounds Haye simply ran away from Valuev (who himself was poor)
Haye had no intention to "knock out" Valuev, he simply planned to get lucky and win on points.
Pretty much this. Valuev was at least trying to make a fight of it, Haye just ran away for most of the rounds and got a lucky win on points. Personally I had Valuev winning by two rounds.

Well for me if I watched it back it would be a boring fight but I was on the edge of my seat because of it being live and me wanting Haye to pull it off. Haye did what he had to, to win and all he did was stick to the gameplan. How the fight went is what Haye was always going to attempt to do.

I couldn't catch the fight but had BBC live update on and BBC after round 11 said Haye would need something special now. Round 12 they were saying why couldn't Haye fight like this the full fight. So I just thought he never done enough to win it and my uncle said the exact same he just ran away from Valuev all night.
