Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has said midfielder Alberto Aquilani could make his debut with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres likely to be out.

Benitez said of Aquilani's inclusion: "He will be with us. He is improving his fitness, so he's in the squad.

"He cannot start at this moment but he will be there and maybe we can give him some minutes. If it's possible, we will try to use him."

Aquilani played for 15 minutes of a reserve match last week, having been recovering from a knee operation since his arrival at the club in the summer.

The 25-year-old said: "It was good to play for the reserves because I haven't played for a long time, but to play for the first team is something different again and I am looking forward to that."
I don't expect to beat Arsenal anyway to be honest, especially without Gerrard and Torres.

It will just be nice to see what this lad can do, although with it being his first, first team game since signing, we obviously wont be seeing his full package right away, it will take time.

Re: Carling Cup Preview and Live Discussion: 27/10 & 28/10

I think it depends on the team Liverpool put out. I dont expect many surprises in our selection but Liverpool will need a win for confidance so I think they will put out a pretty strong side.

Daren you know very well or at least should, that for Liverpool, without Gerrard and Torres there is no such thing as a strong team.

Re: Carling Cup Preview and Live Discussion: 27/10 & 28/10

I like the way that they are reporting Bent won't play when he's not played in the carling cup so far this year and if we do go further in the competition then he might be used but we've done fine without him.

Re: Carling Cup Preview and Live Discussion: 27/10 & 28/10

Well if it was a smaller team it may not be a surprise but you're playing Villa, regardless to whether he has played in the competition this year so far, him not being included against a team actually above you in the league, is a surprise.

Carling Cup holders Manchester United booked a quarter-final place thanks to a comfortable victory at Barnsley.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes from their defeat at Liverpool on Sunday and they went ahead when Anderson's corner was headed in by Danny Welbeck.

Barnsley went close when Daniel Bogdanovic hit the post, but Michael Owen's expert finish doubled the lead.

Gary Neville was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Adam Hammill, but Barnsley could find no way through.

Tottenham shrugged off Everton to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

Robbie Keane wasted a Spurs chance when his shot struck the post before Tom Huddlestone atoned for him by volleying in a David Bentley cross.

Keane earned a penalty after a foul by Sylvain Distin and, after Tim Howard had saved his initial strike, he scored following a goalmouth melee.

Everton rarely looked like staging a comeback as Spurs saw out the game.

Frederic Piquionne was the star as Portsmouth put their poor league form to one side to easily qualify for the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

The much-changed hosts were always in control after Piquionne headed past Steve Simonsen after 17 minutes.

The on-loan Lyon striker then turned provider for Danny Webber who cut in and drove home before stabbing in a third after a mistake by Simonsen.

Kanu added a fourth from close range late on to cap a dominant display.

Blackburn shrugged off a swine flu scare to ease past 10-man Peterborough.

The hosts took the lead through a Morten Gamst Pedersen free-kick before Chris Whelpdale headed an equaliser.

The visitors had goalkeeper Joe Lewis sent off for a foul on Pedersen, with Steven Reid scoring the resulting penalty before George Boyd levelled.

But further close-range goals from Michel Salgado (57), Benni McCarthy (72) and a late penalty from Nicola Kalinic saw Blackburn ease through.
Hmm well how stupid was it for people to be surprised about Bent not being included now Mikk? He was clearly missed.
