It seems that the world of football is having trouble producing great defenders.
Even Italy, whom over the years has always been known for producing great defenders like Maldini, Baresi, Gentile, Scirea, Cannavaro and Nesta, has struggled to produce any new ones.

Anyway, I just wanted to know people's "Top Ten" defenders today.

Terrible list, though i you're right, i can hardly name 10.
You did forget the likes of Alves and Maicon though. As much as they like to attack, they're defenders afterall.
I'd add those two, Pique, Lahm and Santon to that list but. Cordoba and Grosso are shit, Chivu is better for Inter, whilst Nesta is still around... Nesta is probably THE BEST defender of the last decade.
Is this just centre-backs or defenders in general? I'm going to do just centre-halves as comparing full backs and centre backs is pretty tricky.

That's pretty close to being my Top 5 in order, adding another 5 to that is quite tricky, but I'll give it a go here, in no order at all:
Chivu(injury prone so possibly shouldn't even be on this) Mexes(has never really reached his potential, probably shouldn't be on this, but I'm struggling to think of others) Demichelis(Bayern's actual strong performer in defence this year, and in recent years) Cordoba Gonzalo Rodriguez(Best centre-back in Spain by a long way at the moment. They're pretty short on them over there thesedays)

Some young guys who are starting to come through strongly are Criscito, Sakho, Evans and Pique. Give them a few years and they should all be making top 10 lists.
On the side of Lucio, no one made a deal about him because he's been terrible this season lol.
Carragher, Gallas and Toure would have been in my lesser 5 easily once upon a time, but they've been pretty poor these past few seasons. Carra's improved again this year though at least, so he was close.
Nesta is another player worth mentioning but due to his injury this year I can't really include him either.

Carvalho in my top 5 is kind of based of the performances of the past 2 or 3 seasons. He's been one of the best 5 in the world for me. Possibly even better than Terry, just not quite as impressive this year.
Chiellini's been the best defender in Italy of recent. He's been great. His huge improvement is possibly what got him in there for me.
Like I said, I'd have Pique in my list in some regards in a year or two probably, but at the moment he hasn't been around enough playing regular football.
And I know you're a Barca fan, but I'm afraid I don't really rate Puyol as much as I once did.

Tom's list is pretty much all correct but; cept Nesta. Injured or not, he's still better than pretty much anyone. Cannavaro is quite similar tbh. I'd say Maldini cause he's a living legend, but he's best stuck to the 90's.
Gallas and Kolo Toure on their day are quite good, cept their 'day' is rare.

Fair enough, i understand your point. Puyol isn't as good as he used to be, though he's become fair more versatile at the same time.
One for the future, Muniesa. Yeah, La Masia kicks ass.
I've seen none of Muniesa so I can't judge him at all.
Don't even mention Cannavaro. One of the most over-rated players ever, haha. The fact he won the Ballon d'Or (don't really think he even should have) is the only thing in his favour but that's 3 years ago and he hasn't had a good season since. He's been terrible since he donned Madrid's shirt, but what centre-backs aren't?
