The garish yellow and orange striped shirts, that has been described as looking like a banana that someone has been sick on, went on sale at the St James' Park club shop.

But fans stayed away in their droves leaving an embarrassing scene for club

officials who last week took the unusual step of reducing the price by 20 per cent before it had even gone on sale.

The scene was in stark contrast to when local rivals Sunderland launched their away kit earlier this month.

Thousands of fans queued to get their hands on a shirt while big name players signed autographs and chatted to fans.

First in the queue to buy the 'deckchair' shirt, priced at £32 after being reduced from £40, was Stephen Watson from Gateshead.

The 18-year-old said: "I don't even like the shirt but I'm a Newcastle fan so I am still happy to buy it.

"Now I've actually got my hands on it though I think I might wear a jumper on top of it.

"I didn't expect it to be this quiet though. I thought I would get here early in case there was a big queue - I obviously needn't have worried."

Next, and final, in the queue, were mum Angela Lawrence, 38, and her son Jack, ten.

Angela, from Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, said: "I actually don't mind it

that much.

"I think it makes a change from the black and white shirts and Jack likes it.

"He gets all the shirts as soon as they come out and I have never seen it this quiet before."

Jack said: "Its my favourite away shirt ever - I'm going to wear it all the

time."

Other fans and critics have been less kind about the shirt.

Frank Gilmore, chairman of Independent Newcastle United Supporters club,
said:
"The shirt is utterly horrendous.

Steve Wraith, 37, Editor of football fanzine Players Inc, said: "You would have to be colour blind to think this shirt was any good.

"Its horrible and has to go down as one of the worst football shirts ever.

"It looks like a banana that someone has been sick on.

Fan Andrew Burnham, 34, from Gateshead, said: "No fan in there right mind would be seen dead in it - you would look like a deckchair.

"They'll be lucky if they can give these shirts away.

"I wouldn't even use it to wash my car with."

The newly-relegated club is currently in crisis with fans desperate for a buyer to buy it before the Championship season starts in just over two weeks time.

With uncertainty surrounding the clubs future thousands of fans have refused to renew their season tickets.

The team, currently without a manager, will start life in the Championship against West Brom on August 8.

Oh i hope thats true, i know the 20% off is true but not sure if thats correct about just 3 people turning up to buy it.

I don't really mind it... it's something different. If I were a Newcastle fan I probably wouldn't get it when it launched, but I would get it. It's something different compared to those black and white stripes they have.

No wonder I would rather get relegated than have to wear that away shirt, it is a double blow for the Toon army really.
