The 22-year-old Scot is seeded in line with his world ranking of three, behind defending champion Rafael Nadal and five-time champion Roger Federer.

World number one Dinara Safina, who has never been past the third round at Wimbledon, heads the women's seedings.

Five-time and defending champion Venus Williams is the number three seed, with her sister Serena at number two.

Bjorn Borg, who won five successive Wimbledon titles from 1976, has backed Murray to end Britain's long wait for a men's champion in the near future.

"He is ready to win a Grand Slam tournament and is one of my favourites to win Wimbledon," said the Swede.

"He has no weaknesses, he can play on all kinds of surfaces and I was very impressed what he did on the clay court surface. He was hitting the ball extremely well.

"Andy Murray seems to find himself on the court and knows how to behave, focus and play his game.

"He has matured a lot as a person over the last year and as a tennis player. If you compare him now to a few years ago he is a completely different player on the court."

Borg, 53, added: "If he does not win Wimbledon this year, then he has a good chance in the years to come.

"One day, eventually, Andy Murray will win Wimbledon."

The world number one was forced to withdraw from Queen's Club last week with knee trouble and underwent intense rehabilitation in Barcelona.

But fears that the Spaniard might miss Wimbledon receded after he trained at the Aorangi Park practice courts.

Nadal, 23, will play at an exhibition tournament in London on Friday.

"It would be a good test for me to see how the knee is doing," Nadal said of the Hurlingham Club event earlier this week.

Meanwhile, five-time champion Bjorn Borg has raised doubts over Nadal's ability to retain his Wimbledon title.

"Nadal is always a dangerous player because he is the best in the world - but what happened in Paris and then the injury, I am picking Andy Murray or Roger Federer," said the Swede.

"For Nadal to win five in a row (at the French Open) was a big goal this year. I am sure he was very, very disappointed when he went home after Paris.

"That defeat took him many, many days to get over. Nadal is saying he has got an injury, but he has to be fit at Wimbledon if he wants to go all the way, and I do not think he will go all the way this year."

Nadal has been suffering ongoing problems with both knees and after his shock fourth-round defeat at the French Open he travelled to Barcelona to undergo tests.

He was diagnosed with tendonitis in both quadricep tendons as well as a small amount of fluid on the kneecaps.

The Spaniard, who beat great rival Roger Federer in a classic final in 2008, promised to give "200%" in his efforts to be fit for this year's Wimbledon, which begins on Monday 22 June.

But he added: "I will not go out and play on any court, let alone Centre Court at Wimbledon, if I am not 100%."

Great news. Would't be Wimbledon without the Champion there to defend.

Nadal ftl I hope for a Federer or even Murray to win, Andy is doing rather good right now winning Queen's and all, Federer is one of the world's best players and winning this for the 5th time would further his legacy even more.

The Spaniard, making his first appearance on court since struggling with tendinitis in his knees and being knocked out of the French Open fourth round, had not played on grass for 12 months.

The rust showed, as did the lingering impact of his injury, and the 23-year-old has yet to announce a decision on his participation at the All England Club as a result.

"Rafa is having difficulties bending his knees and it seems that his various treatments are not enough," his coach and uncle Toni Nadal said.

"I don't know if he will compete, we have to wait for Friday."

Nadal is set to face Stanislas Wawrinka in a second exhibition match at the Hurlingham Club on Friday.

Sounds like there's no chance of him being anywhere near his best even if he does compete. Sucks.

Andy Murray will begin his assault on the 2009 Wimbledon title against powerful American Robert Kendrick.

It will be the fourth time Murray, seeded number three at the All England Club, and Kendrick, ranked 76 in the world, have played each other on the ATP circuit.

The Scotsman has won all three previous meetings, and most notably romped to a 6-0 6-0 victory on the grass at Newport, Rhode Island, in 2006.

Murray was placed in world number one and defending champion Rafael Nadal's half of the draw and the pair could meet at the semi-final stage.

Nadal, whose participation is still in doubt due to a knee injury, was drawn against Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the first round, and world number two Roger Federer will play Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu.

World number four Novak Djokovic will also face a Frenchman in round one after he was pitted against Julien Benneteau.

The remaining British men in the draw have all been dealt tough first round matches.

19-year-old Dan Evans will play number 12 seed Nikolay Davydenko and James Ward faces a stern examination against Australian Open finalist Fernando Verdasco.

Alex Bogdanovic is up against Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic, and Josh Goodall has been pitted against French serve and volley specialist Michael Llodra.

Nadal Out Of Wimbledon

World number one Rafael Nadal will not defend his Wimbledon men's singles crown because of a knee injury.
Nadal, struggling with tendinitis, tested out his fitness in exhibition matches on Thursday and Friday, but was unhappy with the state of his knee.
"Not to play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions in my career," said the 23-year-old Mallorcan.
Nadal is the first champion not to defend his SW19 crown since Goran Ivanisevic missed the event in 2002.

But the world number one insisted the tendinitis was not career threatening.
"It's not a chronic problem, I can recover for sure," said Nadal. "I'm going to try very hard to come back and when I come back I'm going to come back with 100% mentality because when I play now, I was thinking more about the knee.
"I'm 23 and I hope to have a long career and come back next year - no one is more disappointed than me and the Wimbledon crowd must understand I tried my best."

But two hours after losing to Olympic doubles champion Wawrinka, Nadal made public his decision to pull out of Wimbledon.
"I didn't feel terrible but I was not at my best," said Nadal, referring to his fitness levels against Wawrinka.
Nadal, who beat Roger Federer in a classic final in 2008, had previously stated he would not defend his Wimbledon crown if he was not 100% fit.
