Thing is, after hearing that Valencia are not willing to sell David Silva (or so they claim) I wonder how bad their financial situation is. Maybe selling Villa would be enough.
Perez has never been one to worry about the defence. Don't you remember the first Galactico era? In one summer, 16 players left (among them their key holding midfielder, Claude Makelele) and 1 player arrived: David Beckham.
I can so see Perez just going after a striker now and forgetting about their defensive problems. Garay is arriving from Racing (he was signed in the Calderon era but went back on loan) but he won't be enough to sort out their backline. When you have to play Heinze in the centre sometimes you've got a shit defence.
------
Interesting that on the list Dmac posted, Juve made 2 of the top 10 biggest transfers ever the summer they lost Zidane to Real for a record fee. They also brought in Thuram and I believe Trezeguet, and were very successful thereafter. We need big names to replace Ronaldo and freshen up the team.

The news stories make Valencia seem like they have a wretched among of debt, but who knows?
Juventus also bought Buffon in the summer of 01, so selling Zidane netting them quite a bit.
As for Real Madrid, it really does look like the Galactico era re-invented. I just can't see it working this time either...
