Paul Ince has agreed a two-year deal to return to Milton Keynes Dons for a second spell as manager.
He succeeds Roberto Di Matteo, who has gone to West Bromwich Albion, one year after leaving the Dons to take charge at Premier League side Blackburn.
Rovers sacked Ince in December after he won only three times in 17 matches.
Dons chairman Pete Winkelman said: "We felt he had unfinished business and it feels right he should return and build on the momentum he helped create."
Former England midfielder Ince first arrived at Stadium MK in 2007, leaving Macclesfield - his first managerial appointment - where he had kept the struggling Silkmen in the Football League.
Should never have left tbh.

Southampton have named former West Ham and Charlton manager Alan Pardew as their new boss.
His appointment on a three-year deal was rubber-stamped in the early hours of Friday, BBC Radio Solent can reveal.
Pardew, 47, said: "I'm proud and very excited to be joining a club with an immense history and huge potential."
New Saints owner Markus Liebherr said:"We are delighted to have been able to attract Alan to St Mary's from a very strong field of candidates."
Pardew, who has been out of football since leaving Charlton in November 2008, replaces Mark Wotte.
Big job for Pardew down on the South Coast. It's not going easy getting back into the Championship, but at least they've gone for an experianced manager - and not a publicity stunt guy, as they were reported to be after Keegan a few weeks ago.
Southport FC (my hometown team) went back to Liam Watson last year so this is his first summer, So far so good. Quality non league signings. Lets hope we don't fuck it up in the playoffs again!

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is in talks with Notts County about becoming director of football, BBC Radio Nottingham understands.
The Magpies, who have recently been taken over by a Middle-Eastern consortium, are refusing to confirm or deny the reports.
Earlier newspaper reports had linked Eriksson with the club's manager role.
The 61-year-old, who spent five years in charge of England, was sacked as coach of Mexico in April.
BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater said: "Claims that Notts are to appoint Eriksson as manager are wide off the mark.
"It is far more likely Eriksson will be brought in as director of football."
The former Manchester City manager is not the only high-profile name to be linked with the job.
Slater added: "My understanding is that Eriksson is not the first high-profile personality to be linked with the newly created post as director of football.
"Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has also been in the frame."
Following Eriksson's dismissal in Mexico, he had been linked with a return to the Premier League with Portsmouth.
