Newcastle's 16-year stay in the Premier League was ended in limp fashion as Damien Duff's own goal consigned them to a devastating defeat at Aston Villa.
Losses for Hull and Sunderland meant Alan Shearer's side needed only a draw to ensure their top-flight survival.
But a weary display rarely looked like earning Newcastle salvation, although Obafemi Martins twice should have done better well placed inside the area.
Gareth Barry's deflected shot won it, before David Edgar saw red late on.
Middlesbrough's 11-year stay in the Premier League came to a crashing halt at Upton Park after losing rather limply to West Ham.
It was a must-win game for Boro but any hopes of survival were soon dashed with a first-half strike by Carlton Cole who slotted in Herita Ilunga's cross.
Gary O'Neil gave the visitors brief hope after the break, blasting in after a dazzling run by Tuncay Sanli.
Junior Stanislas sealed Boro's fate with a soft shot creeping into the net.
Hull survived relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth as they lost to Manchester United but results elsewhere went their way.
Sunderland were beaten by Chelsea but avoided relegation as their rivals did not get the results to overtake them.
Liverpool ended their campaign with a comfortable win in which Sami Hyppia appeared as a substitute late on in his final appearance for the Anfield club.
Robin van Persie scored twice as Arsenal ended their season in style.
Cesc Fabregas' low cross was turned into his own net by James Beattie and Van Persie then scored with a penalty after being fouled by Ryan Shawcross.
Vassiriki Diaby headed the third and Van Persie hit the bar with a free-kick before Stoke's Ricardo Fuller netted a penalty after being fouled by Denilson.
Leon Osman's two goals secured victory for Everton, who also sealed fifth-place in the Premier League.
Manchester City ended the season on a high after Felipe Caicedo's eighth goal of the season made the difference in this mid-table encounter.
Blackburn and West Bromwich Albion played out a goalless draw that had an end-of-season-feel written all over it.

We did better today than we have recently and we can't complain much as we've scored against chelsea and given them a good 2nd half.

Boro are a well run club. They just have average-poor players who havent performed when needed.
And yet they didn't sack Southgate when they really should have.
Look at Portsmouth. They sacked Adams when it wasn't going well and they've been rewarded with survival. The warning signs were there for Boro, but Gibson is proof that being too patient is just as dangerous as not being patient enough.

Sucks for Newcastle & Middlesborugh. This could be a real blessing for Newcastle though, they really need to rebuild their squad & this could be the way to do it. As for middlesborough there relegation was confirmed a long time ago so no real surprise that they went down.
Some of the Newcastle players i can see leaving & finding decent clubs: Viduka, Owen, Duff, Martins, Nolan, Bassong, Ameobi, Smith & possibly Barton. everyone else could either stay or move to lesser clubs.

Southgate didn't take charge yesterday you know. He's made some terrible buys.
So turn the club upside down by sacking a very popular manager who both fans and players like instead of taking the chance on him and keeping everything running smoothly? A new manager isnt guaranteed to keep you up anyway, Newcastle have had four managers this season and got relegated. Unless you can get someone better you dont just sack the manager for the sake of it, Boro would have had limited options and obviously believed Southgate was better placed than the alternatives.

There's a balance though. Obviously I'm not saying they should act like Newcastle, but Southgate was a bad appointment in the first place being totally unqualified. He had made bad moves in the transfer market and clearly wasn't doing a good job mid-season. Sometimes you have to make a decision as a chairman, which is why patience isn't always a good thing. Southgate should have gone. Fair enough, you can say its easy to criticise with the benefit of hindsight, but there was no reason to believe Southgate was the man to keep the club in the Premier League.
