Steve Coppell has resigned as Reading manager after Tuesday's defeat by Burnley denied the Royals a place in the Championship play-off final.

The 53-year-old took charge in 2003 and guided Reading into the Premier League three years later but they were relegated in 2008.

Coppell's men lost 2-0 to Burnley on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.

"Following our play-off exit I feel it's the best thing, for both the club and myself, for me to leave," he said.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Reading manager and would like to thank everyone connected to the club for the support I have received."

Coppell and Reading chairman John Madejski will hold a news conference at 1100 BST on Thursday.

Reading were looking to make an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last season and made a superb start to the campaign.
Told you Tom, he knew it was coming so he resigned before they could sack him.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

Very sad news. Steve Coppell has done a wonderful job at Reading. I've been to see them play numerous times over the last two seasons, and really hoped they'd get back up this season.

With Steve gone, I can see an exodus of players now. Doyle, and the Hunts will be off to pastures new come the end of the summer. It could be a long stay for them in the Championship.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

It all comes down to who they bring in I'd say, I mean it shouldn't be hard to find candidates for this job. A big name is what I expect to be honest.

Paul Jewell sprang to my mind when I first heard the news.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

Paul Jewell would be an okay appointment but I think they can do better.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

It came as a slight surprise to me I though he may leave it a week or two before he resigned but to do it straight after the match really was shocking. I think Coppell took Reading as far as he could go with them and it's time he moved on and they got someone else in but not sure who though.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

Curbishley will get it.

Interesting that they've released Leroy Lita. Would be a good signing for us if we go up. No chance if we don't obviously, but that's the only thing we've needed all season, someone to get us 20-25 goals.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

I reckon that Leroy Lita did something bad at the club discipline wise because at one point he was top scorer... then he stopped getting picked... then he was sent out on loan and now he has been released.

Re: Coppell resigns as Reading boss

Apparently he's attitude stinks, and he thinks he's the big man. If he came to Millwall, he'd soon be taken down a peg or two. We don't like arrogant people.
