Birmingham have made an instant return to the Premier League after winning at Reading to claim the Championship's second automatic promotion place.
Keith Fahey's crisp first-half opener and Kevin Phillips' composed finish looked to have promotion sown up.
But a minute after Phillips' scored, Royals substitute Marek Matejovsky cut inside and drilled the ball home.
But Birmingham survived the Reading rally and Blues substitute Garry O'Connor's shot hit the post late on.
Birmingham had not been lower than third all season and manager Alex McLeish can now look forward to another go at managing in the Premier League after he failed to prevent Blues from relegation last May.
Norwich joined Charlton in League One after crashing at The Valley.
A win and Barnsley losing at Plymouth would have kept the Canaries up but they were three down within 30 minutes.
Preston squeezed into the Championship play-offs by the narrowest of margins after they beat QPR 2-1 and Cardiff lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday.
Graham Alexander scored a penalty in each half as Burnley made certain of a place in the Championship play-offs.
Cardiff City suffered heartache as they fell out of the Championship play-offs on the last day of the regular season.
Preston are winning the playoffs.

Preston/Burnley final for me. Preston because they're the team that's sneaked in by the tiniest of margains, and that team usually goes on to do well, and Burnley because they're the form side, and Reading will be devastated with their loss today.
And on the subject of Preston, I've been saying for years, ever since we had a few battles back in Division 1 in 2001/2002 or so, that they deserve a crack at the Premiership. They're a fantastic footballing side.

I'm gutted Cardiff didn't make it. At the end of the day they bottled it, and will have to spend another season in the Championship.
It's either Sheff United or Burnley for me. Had Reading won today then i'd have gone for them.
It's setting up to be another fantastic season in the Championship next year. I can't wait to see Newcastle coming down to Cardiff To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
It's not all about that game. Cardiff have had plenty of chances to seal their place in the play offs, and in the end they just couldn't get it done. Over the last few weeks, City haven't deserved a play off spot.
It's not but that will be the main game that will be looked at, if it had been even 1 goal less, they would have been well beaten at 5-0 but would have got into the playoffs on goal difference.

1 point out of the last 12 shows that there was more to it than the Preston game. Not being able to "get up for it" in their final match ever at Ninian Park had something to do with it.
That's the funny thing, they was all expecting for the Play-Off game to be their final game at Ninian Park, and it turns out a 3-0 defeat was. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
