Roy Keane is Ipswich Town's leading candidate to replace sacked manager Jim Magilton, BBC Sport understands.
The 37-year-old has been out of work since December when he resigned as Sunderland manager having been in charge of the club for 27 months.
Keane's lawyer Michael Kennedy said he was unaware that Ipswich were interested in his client.
Ipswich chief executive Simon Clegg declined to comment on the Championship club's reported interest in Keane.
Magilton, 39, had been in charge of Ipswich for nearly three years but his highest finish was eighth.
Former Republic of Ireland captain Keane arrived at the Stadium of Light in August 2006, earned promotion from the Championship in 2007 and kept the Black Cats in the Premier League last season.
But the Irishman became unhappy following the arrival of majority shareholder American Ellis Short in September and walked away from the club nearly five months ago.
In February the Irishman said that he would like to return to management in the future and would consider coaching outside the Premier League.
I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that should he take over at Ipswich, they may be overacheivers next season. I know that they have been in the Premiership, I remember, but they have sunk since their last relegation.
We all remember how Keane turned Sunderland around.

Rumours are it will be announced tomorrow. Keane spent nearly 80 million to spend at Sunderland. If i was a Sunderland fan after spending 80 million in 3 years i would feel robbed of an opportunity to be challenging for trophies and the players didnt really like him either. I cant see him suceeding at Ipswich but i may be proved wrong.

Tell me about it.
Keane is a good level championship manager but will bottle it when it gets too difficult for him which is what he did at Sunderland.
Yes the fans are very appreciative of what he did here however he let us down when we needed him most and to be honest, Ipswich can have his difficult arse.
If you want a team not to play for each other and the fans then Keane is the man for the job.

Roy Keane has been appointed manager of Championship side Ipswich Town.
The 37-year-old signed a two-year contract following the dismissal of Jim Magilton on Wednesday.
Keane has been out of work since December when he resigned as Sunderland manager, having taken the club from the Championship to the Premier League.
"I truly believe I am joining a club that has the potential, ambition and infrastructure to once again be a Premier League side," said Keane.
The ex-Manchester United captain will hold a news conference at 1600 BST on Thursday.
Ambitious Ipswich owner Marcus Evans has spent £12m on new players since he took the club over in late 2007 in an attempt to reach the Premier League.
Magilton, who took over from Joe Royle in 2006, was sacked for failing to guide Ipswich to the Championship play-off places, with assistant boss John Gorman also leaving the Suffolk club.
Coach Bryan Klug has placed in charge of the first team for Saturday's game at Cardiff City while Keane acquaints himself with his new surroundings.
"The club's owner (Marcus Evans) and chief executive (Simon Clegg) impressed upon me their total focus on achieving this quest at the earliest opportunity and I can't wait to get started," said the ex-Manchester United midfielder.
A very good appointment imo.

His mentality will be just what a team like Ipswich needs. Ipswich are always hovering around the play-offs, but never seem to get in them. Maybe Keane will put a bit of bollocks in them to make that leap.

This is very surprising it was only yesterday I heard Magilton was sacked and I thought that was harsh, turn on skysports news and Keane is wearing an Ipswich jumper, seems a bit of a stitch up on Magilton in my opinion. Tough game for Cardiff on Saturday with them only needing a point to have a concrete playoff place.
It will be interesting to see how Keano does though.
