Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has admitted defender Martin Laursen's career is in doubt after his season was ended by yet another knee problem.
The Dane has not played since January because of the latest in a string of injuries which have plagued him since he joined Villa from Milan in 2004.
"The news isn't good, he's deliberating what to do. We hoped he'd recover but he's having a hard time," said O'Neill.
"He'll make the decision and, whatever decision he comes to, I will respect."
Laursen cost Villa £3m but was restricted to just 28 appearances in his first three seasons at the club because of knee problems.
In 2007-08, his fitness improved and he played in every Premier League game, scoring six goals and winning the Villa fans' player of the season award.
But this campaign his bad luck returned and he suffered an injury against West Ham just before Christmas, since when he has only made one appearance.
Laursen appeared to be on the mend but he broke down again in training in January and has not played since.
He is obviously a very committed player and it would be very sad to see him retire early, but at the risk of his knee being fucked in later years, is it really worth it?
He needs to consider his life after football.

Aston Villa captain Martin Laursen has announced his retirement after admitting defeat in a battle against persistent knee problems.
The 31-year-old former Denmark international, 31, suffered his latest injury against West Ham in December and has since made just one appearance.
After an unsuccessful return to light training in March, he has now called a close to his career.
Laursen made 91 appearances and scored 11 goals in his time at Villa Park.
Manager Martin O'Neill praised the leadership qualities that persuaded him to make Laursen skipper at the beginning of this campaign.
"We've missed his defensive qualities, we've missed his goals at the other end, but mainly we've missed his influence in the team," he told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Over the last couple of seasons the influence he has exerted has really been terrific."
It had been hoped that as Laursen's most recent injury was to his right knee, which has been problem-free through his career, he would recover to play again this season.
But after aggravating the joint during Villa's win over West Brom in January, he underwent surgery and then suffered a further reaction during a training trip to Dubai in April.
Faced with the option of going under the knife once more and an extended spell on the sidelines, the former AC Milan player has decided to hang up his boots.
Such a shame and a huge blow for Villa.

He doesn't need to do a lot, I'm not sure he even needs to replace Laursen, you have Curtis Davis who could actually be a candidate for the armband and big Zat Knight.

Yeah, but we need depth across the entire side, including defense if we ever want to make the Champions League. Laursen was more then just a body out there for Villa, he was quite a good leader back there.

You argue for the sake of arguing...anyone ever tell you that? Im not making light of Davis. All im saying is Laursen's loss isnt exactly a non issue for a club lacking in depth.

Its not a coincidance that as soon as they lost Laursen they started to lose points. Curtis Davis isnt anywhere near as good as Laursen was.
I was going to say the same thing, but figured itd get me nowhere.
But losing him wasnt the only issue...We just hit the wall. Too many games for too small of a squad. Along with losing Laursen, Cuellar was out for awhile too.Carew was out awhile. Alot of minor injuries, and alot of heartbreaking results = doom for that 4th spot.
