Steven Gerrard is the only non-Manchester United player in the running for the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year award.

The Liverpool captain is joined on the shortlist by United's Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar.

Jonny Evans and Rafael Da Silva are nominees for the young player award.

Also in contention with the United pair are Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, Aaron Lennon and Stephen Ireland.

Defender Vidic is favourite to lift the trophy at London's Grosvenor House on 26 April.

Voting took place before United's recent dip in form, perhaps explaining why the list of contenders is dominated by players from Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

But Gerrard could benefit from a split vote for United players as David Ginola did during their 1999 treble-winning season - an outcome that annoyed Ferguson.

Giggs has never won the award, whereas Ronaldo could become the first player to win it three years in a row.

After a superb season for Manchester City, Ireland is favourite to succeed Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas as the country's top youngster.

Agbonlahor and Young have both impressed for Aston Villa, while Tottenham winger Lennon has also caught the eye.
Well we all know that Gerrard has been better than Ronaldo this season but I have a feeling Giggs may win it.

Gerrard and Vidic for 1st and 2nd for the main award, and Ireland and Evans 1st and 2nd for the Young Player award.

Oh no doubt that Ireland should definitely win the young player of the year, easily the most improved player in the league by a long stretch.

What does a spit vote mean, does that mean that United players have to vote for someone and obviously they can't vote for their own players?

Yeah yoy have to vote for someone from another team, at least thats how it works in the SPL.

1. Gerrard
2. Vidic
3. Van Der Sar

1. Ireland
2. Agbonlahor
3. Lennon

Thats my opinion, I found the young player tougher to vote for to be honest

Yeah they have to vote for someone from another team so Gerrard gets all those votes, but split vote means, people will be split between which United player performed the best and so instead of one United player dominating there could two or three with similiar amount of votes whilst Gerrard picks up the rest to win...pretty much.
