Brazil and Inter Milan striker Adriano is to take a break from football and "rethink his career".

"I've lost the happiness of playing," he told reporters on Thursday. "I wouldn't like to go back to Italy, I want to live in peace here in Brazil."

Adriano, 27, said he could not say how long he would stay away from the game.

"I don't know if I'm going to stay for one, two or three months without playing," said the former Flamengo star. "I'm going to rethink my career."

He said his agent, Gilmar Rinaldi, would be in contact with Inter next week and said he was aware his decision could cost him financially.

"Gilmar is going to Italy to ask for some time for me and it is fair that I am given no money," he said.

Adriano, whose contract with Inter runs until June 2010, also denied media reports of possible illness or addiction problems.
For how much he gets paid a week to play how can anyone not enjoy playing?

It really is a ridiculous thought, for a salary like that he can have a smile permenatly put on his face through surgery and pretend he's happy.

Re: Unhappy Adriano plans sabbatical

Is it unfeeling of me that I cannot generate much sympathy for a man paid millions to play a game when he is unhappy?

Re: Unhappy Adriano plans sabbatical

I've got my plane to Milan booked, I'm off to take him place... I'd be doing more than he is at the moment.

I hear ya.

I'm in about the same shape that Adriano is half the time - round. But I give a full effort and I act happy even when I'm not. I offer so much more than Adriano.

Re: Unhappy Adriano plans sabbatical

Well actually, I'm in very good condition so I would probably be better than Adriano.

I hit the gym quite frequently, so I'm not in horrible shape. Though I seriously doubt I could run the 10k required in a full 90 minute match....

Re: Unhappy Adriano plans sabbatical

I train twice a week and run a mile a day on the treadmill, but I think we are drifting a little off topic here.

Seriously, Inter should just release him, he has to be the most unprofessional player in the game. Amir Zaki has nothing on him.

Yeah, didn't meant to take it that off-topic. Ah well...

As for Adriano, there was a time when he was one of my favorite players out there and I really figured he would be what Ronaldo was in his prime. Just goes to show that talent doesn't count for all that much when the head isn't on straight.

What may turn out to be the most ironic thing is that Inter standing by him through all his problems, while commendable, may also have made the situation worse. If they had just said "no" and released him, he may have straightened out a bit. Or not...

He just went mental after his father died a couple of years ago. He has a massive drink problem as well. He just couldnt handle the fame and the pressure of being famous. Quality player when his head is right though.

Re: Unhappy Adriano plans sabbatical

Didn't Inter turn down some monster offers for him from Chelsea and Real Madrid a few years ago? Or were those just rumors?
