Liverpool moved top of the Premier League and kept their title hopes alive with an injury-time winner at Fulham.
The Reds, above Manchester United by two points but having played two games more, struck very late after hitting the woodwork four times in the match.
Andrea Dossena hit the bar twice - each time with a header, Xabi Alonso volleyed against the bar and Fernando Torres dragged a shot against the post.
But on 92 minutes, Yossi Benayoun drove in from 12 yards to snatch victory.
Alan Shearer's return to Newcastle United ended in bitter disappointment as Chelsea outlined the size of the task awaiting the man brought back to St James' Park to navigate a route away from relegation.
Shearer's return as manager until the end of the season was the catalyst for a wave of optimism that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley hoped would provide the impetus for a move out of the Premier League danger zone.
Chelsea, however, were in no mood to indulge the dreams of the expectant Geordie nation - merely plunging them into further turmoil as they comfortably outclassed Shearer's new charges.
Frank Lampard broke the deadlock with a 56th-minute header after Nicolas Anelka's shot had been deflected on to the bar and Florent Malouda wrapped up the win from close range nine minutes later.
Emmanuel Adebayor returned from injury to score twice as Arsenal turned on the style to overcome Manchester City.
Cesc Fabregas, also back from a long spell out, delivered a superb free-kick for the Togo striker to head his first.
City's Gelson Fernandes almost levelled when he struck the post from eight yards out, while Kolo Toure and Andrei Arshavin went close for the Gunners.
Arsenal sealed the points when Adebayor rounded Shay Given after being played in by Fabregas's exquisite pass.
An emphatic second-half display from Bolton left struggling Middlesbrough deeper in the relegation mire.
Stoke won away for the first time in the Premier League to boost their survival chances but severely dent the hopes of rock-bottom West Brom.
A late goal from substitute Andre Ooijer grabbed an unlikely win for relegation-threatened Blackburn against 10-man Tottenham.
Youth team products Junior Stanislas and James Tomkins grabbed a goal each as West Ham eased past Sunderland to boost their hopes of a place in Europe.
Hull City's poor league form at the KC Stadium continued as they failed to overcome 10-man Portsmouth.
Well actually I wouldn't say it was lucky in that you should have scored earlier, but it was definitely sickening that you scored so late. We have done it a lot this year but you've done it more.

We're coming into form at the right time. Its a shame we drew those five in a row. If we had managed to scrape even 1-0 wins we would be top of the league right now. Hopefully they dont effect us too badly for the final positions.
