BBC Sport understands that Alan Shearer will be appointed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season.
Magpies legend Shearer, 38, has been continually linked with a return to the club but has been critical of the current structure at the club.
Chris Hughton is currently in caretaker charge of the club as interim manager Joe Kinnear recovers from a triple heart bypass.
The Magpies are currently 18th in the table with 29 points from 30 matches.
Shearer scored 206 goals in 404 appearances during a 10-year playing stint to earn legendary status on Tyneside after joining for a record £15m fee from Blackburn.
The former England striker, who retired from playing in 2006, has made no secret of his desire to become a manager one day.
However, Shearer, now a pundit on BBC TV's Match of the Day, is believed to be put off from returning to St James' Park by the regime of owner Mike Ashley - which he described as "strange" in March.
Both on and off the pitch, Newcastle have lurched from one crisis to the next this season following the departure of Kevin Keegan early in the campaign.
Following a fans' backlash over Keegan's exit, owner Mike Ashley raised the possibility of selling the club, before deciding to stay on.
Key striker Michael Owen has been involved in just four games this year due to an ankle injury, while Charles N'Zogbia moved to Wigan in the January transfer window after a high-profile bust-up out with Kinnear.
Hughton also denied owner Ashley had come to dressing room after the game to speak to the players.
The Magpies have 29 points from 30 matches and sit 18th of 20 teams, two points below 17th-place Blackburn.
He's finally taken the job after rejecting it for a long time, so I can't see him leaving after a few months.

Well assuming its true, Newcastle fans have wanted this for a long time. Let's see if Shearer can live up to the type and save the team from relegation. I agree that their problems are deep, but if they can stay up this year that is all thats required for now. A lot of whats wrong with the club involves the fans not liking the current regime, and the appointment of Shearer will go some way to appeasing them and bringing new hope to the club.
If he does decent I expect him to stay on.
And yeah Mikk, they may have jumped the gun.

Well sadly the way I see it is, this is his first managing job so until he learns the ropes, the current regime are going to be showing him what to do and not a lot is going to change fast enough to save them.

Yeah but it's not like they've got a mountain to climb. They could easily have stayed up with Hughton.
Well I suppose but they aren't in a very good position and their next few games are Chelsea at home, Stoke at the Britania where they are deadly and Spurs at WHL. Not to mention they still have to play us at Anfield.
