Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is considering applying for a British passport after again failing to rule out the possibility of playing for England.
The Spaniard joined the Gunners from Celta Vigo in July 2004, and so under residency laws would soon be eligible to apply to become a naturalised British citizen.
Almunia may feel he stands more of a chance of being called up to represent England, with the likes of Iker Casillas and Jose Reina currently Spain's first-choice shot-stoppers.
The 31-year-old told Arsenal's official website: "People are asking this question now because I have been in England for five years and am able to apply for a passport.
"I am taking in the information, what I need to do for a passport. I think, for January next year, maybe I can have the permission.
"Maybe I will get a passport, then after, if I get the call-up [from England], I will think about this."
Well James can't play for England forever, Paul Robinson failed hard for England, Joe Hart isn't holding down a first team place anymore and I think that Almunia is better than Rob Green.
So this could be interesting.

I've never been a huge fan of Aluminia - I really wanted to see Arsenal bring in someone to replace Lehmann - but I can't complain too much about how he's done. Alumninia clearly isn't an elite keeper but he's pretty solid. If he was playing at the same level then as he is now, I think he would probably be in the running for England.

I think it would be worth giving him a shot even if its just a friendly like Dmac said. Worst case scenario is he doesnt perform, best case is you have a new number one. He's only 31 so he is in his prime for a keeper and has a good few years left in him. He is prone to making the occasional error (Usually his kicking) but what keeper isnt?

Well like I explained, in my honest opinion I feel he would be the best choice other than James, unless another keeper pops up between now and James' retirement.

Ben Foster is the future for England. He'll be Uniteds first choice by the end of next season, as Van Der Sarr will wind down.
If Joe Hart gets a move this summer, then I think he could be in with a shout of the England number 1 shirt too. These are the two keepers who'll have to step up to the plate next season.
Well Van der Sar hasn't announced his retirement yet and I feel that having just down coming back out international retirement he will play club football for a little while longer.
Joe Hart I can see getting a move but I don't know who would come in for him, he has the ability, but who needs a keeper in the Premiership right now?

A Spaniard playing for England would be a joke. International football is about representing your own country, not a country you have played in for a few years.

Well he qualifies under the residency rule as of sometime in June or July and seeing as out national coach isn't English himself do you really see him having a problem with it?

He'll have an English passport. He will be just as eligable as John Terry to play for England. He wouldnt be the first either. Hargeeves is Canadian yet played for England and no-one complained.
